Just wondering: how far did you end up on your ROL list on Match Day? I understand this may be a sore point for some people, but for those of you who are comfortable sharing, I'm just curious how many programs should be ranked. (Feel free to make recommendations based on ranking lots of community programs vs competitive academic centers).

This was sort of covered in yaah's "A pathology match day related poll" dating to 04-02-2004. More data would always be nice, however, although the n value was an impressive 37. To summarize:

1st choice: 20 (54.05%)
2nd choice: 4 (10.81%)
3rd choice: 4 (10.81%)
4th choice: 0 (0.00%)
5th or higher: 5 (13.51%)
Scrambled: 1 (2.70%)
Took spot outside match: 3 (8.11%)

Someone needs to remember to start a similar poll after match day 2005, although it may take some time to emerge from our respective alcohol-induced catatonias. 😴

I didnt do the match, seriously try to get out of it if you can. Pretend to be interested in writing KO8 grants for the department if thats what it takes.

What's so bad about the match?

Anyhow, I thought the days of contracting outside the match in path were pretty much past...correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, from what I hear, the way things are now you have to have "special circumstances" to get a spot outside of the match. Being a US med school grad who wants to do path and is a good candidate is not special circumstances.

Special circumstances include (as far as I know)
1) Already in another residency
2) Already a med school graduate
3) Combined degree people

If you are a research heavy US grad, you are unlikely to get a spot outside the match. I simply don't think it's legal anymore. Times have changed, my friend.
