Background:
Was thinking about applying for admission as a second-degree student at Hunter or CCNY. BUT second-degree students get the fscking shaft when it comes to course registration.

I've heard that CCNY used to give second degree students the same registration date as seniors, and now they are below freshman in registration priority! I looked into their formal postbacc programs-they give you priority over regular second degree students, but you are still behind undergraduates (so, pretty much a useless benefit).

I know it is difficult to get into the more sought after classes at huge public universities-I am not naive. However:

Questions:
1) For those of you who did a DIY postbacc at Hunter or CCNY, how difficult was it to get into classes? Was it impossible, and did you have to wait until another semester? Or did you almost always get the classes you sought with some perseverance and schedule flexibility?

2) Do you know of any CUNYs that don't shaft second degree students w/r/t registration priority?

You can get whatever classes you need but you have to be on top of your game. Register ASAP, use epermits (which allow you to take classes at other schools), and persistently check to see if people dropped classes. you might end up with weird schedules or not take classes immediately in sequence (ie physics 1 and 2 a year apart), but you'll get everything you need. If you're not working full time, you should definitely be able to get every class you need.

Good to know. Regarding epermit, I have heard that spreading postbacc classes across multiple institutions is frowned upon, but I suppose this wouldn't matter as it would still be within the CUNY system.

still shows up as multiple entries in your app, and you have to send all transcripts from every CUNY, but no one seemed to care when I applied

Good to know, thanks. Was there a CUNY that you liked or disliked more than the rest, or was it pretty much a wash? Right now I'm looking at either CCNY or Hunter, with CCNY being a little closer to where I live.

Does anyone know whether you have to be in the formal postbacc program to get a committee letter? I've emailed and gotten no response. CCNY says you need to be in their program in premedical studies for a committee letter: there is the formal postbacc and undergraduate application for this. I was probably going to enroll as a second degree and then after a year complete the undergraduate application for the program in premedical studies.

Hunter College has a committee letter requirements section for transfers (which I guess second degrees qualify as).

A committee letter seems to be one of many benefits they advertise as part of the formal postbacc program. Although, so long as I meet the GPA and credit hours requirement, and am a second degree student, I am not sure how they can justify refusing me the committee letter.
