Do you guys ever find it helpful to record lectures? I’m going to buy a new iPod or MP3, and I was wondering if I should get one that can record lectures too. And yes, I’ll definitely be attending Western this fall 🙂

Good news for you... lectures are automatically uploaded to a website where you can download it onto your computer and put it on your ipod if you choose. So don't make any extra recording investments!

Glad to hear that! Do they upload the video and the power point slides along with the audio files? Also, do you know if the audio files can be downloaded to MP3 also? I've never owned an MP3, so I don't know much about the type of files they use...I was thinking of getting an MP3 this time cuz' iPods don't offer bluetooth technology yet.
OnMyWayThere, thanks for the info!!!

"Audio only" is recorded by a separate system. It is in mp3 format and is uploaded to the "backup audio" section of blackboard.

Video+audio is recorded by apreso, it syncs audio/video along with the presenter's powerpoint (so the video shows the slide advancing as the presenter advances it). These are NOT SAVABLE, they are only streaming.

Aside from that, don't get an iPod please... I can't figure out why people keep buying those things.

1) They only play like 2 real formats (mp3, AAC.. they also play WAV and AIFF but who the hell uses those) unless you load it up with rockbox (an open source firmware).

2) You have to use itunes or some 3rd party software like mediamonkey to put songs on there, as opposed to just hooking it up and drag-n-drop files to it like many other players allow you to do. Plus with other players that allow drag-n-drop, you can use your mp3 player as a portable hard drive to store things other than songs on it.

3) You need to buy separate add-ons if you want to record audio or listen to FM with your iPod (many others have these built in standard).

If you want to get a mainstream-ish player like the iPod but doesn't suck as much, maybe go with a zen vision or something. If you just want a good mp3 player with good, practical features, check out the old iriver hl-1x series. They aren't made anymore, but you can find them on ebay. Also might want to look at the archos players. No iPods, no Zunes plz!

Just my $0.02

hey cyclohexanol, I don't see you on campus that much. I bought a Sansa 4 GB MP3 player to download the lectures from Apreso, and I listen to the lecture during my long drive on the 210 freeway! I can fit many lectures on that thing.

To the OP, the classroom lectures are always taped on Apreso, from 8am-12pm, and 1-6pm. Sometimes we have a "review" in the classroom during the 12pm lunch hour, Apreso is off & not recorded. You can ask the IT guys to tape if you need it during the lunch hour.

My only complaint is that there is no Apreso in the OMM lab. I suggested to the administration about recording OMM lab demonstrations. They are recording the OMM lectures & lab demos most of the time, but it takes a while to transfer to the digital file.
Therefore, OMM lab videos are not available immediately, but our regular classroom lectures are available online all the time.

 hey dude how's it goin? I was actually going to call you yesterday to see how things were going. The sansa players are pretty nice, practical features, inexpensive, microsd slot, etc... nice!

The lunch hour isn't automatically available via apreso (streaming video), but it is via the backup audio (mp3) if you just want to hear, and don't want to go through the hassle of contacting IT to get them to put it up.

OMM lab apreso would be cool, I guess for now we're stuck with ginormous downloadable mpegs until they justify spending the money for a system in there too (which I'm not so sure they would).

Good stuff! Anyway, I'll give ya a shout sometime this week. Take it easy.

Aren't OMM lab videos kind of worthless anyway....its not like you could skip lab if you want (with required attendance and all.)

They could be useful when you're trying to remember how to do one of those dozen or so screening exams 4 months after it was taught while you were asleep in lab and not paying attention.

Other than that, not very useful (and thus why there probably will never be apreso in lab).
