So today I shadowed for the first time at my old pediatric dentist's place. He's been teaching at BU for a long time now and he was telling me about all these big connections he has at a lot of the schools I'm applying to. Before I left today he told me to let him know if he can help me out with any of the schools. Would it be bad/weird for me to ask him to put in a good word about me at some different schools? I'd love to ask him, I'll take any help I can get....I just don't know if that's a shady thing to ask.

nope. take that ticket and go all the way baby. 👍

Considering this was your first day shadowing there, I wouldnt pull that one out just yet....but yea eventually you probably could. Make sure you get a letter of recommendation too!

oh yeah, im not going to ask him right away. I'm going back a bunch more times so maybe when I'm sending out the application I'll ask him.

Should I be trying to get LORs from the dentists I shadow?

Unless there is another non-relative dentist that knows you better, yes.

If he is eager to help you out then take it. I also agree that you may want to add a little more meat (establish a more firm relationship) to his sauce (him wanting to help you out). Damn...weird metaphors going on over here today.

I scour this site for valuable tidbits all the time and I've never heard of this. :scared:
So, to make sure I understand the LOR concept correctly, I need LOR from at least two science profs, one from any discipline, and then the dentists I've shadowed. Any other LORs I'll need?

Some schools require a letter from a dentist. Schools differ but if they want the dentist letter than they usually want two science professors + one dentist. Not all schools require this but you might as well get one on file to keep your options open.
