I was just reading through a match list and see that there are two categories on the match list: Residency institution and internship institution.

Some of the students had both a residency and internship institution filled out. What does this mean? Right now, I'm inclined to think that this means the student didn't match into a residency position right out of medical school and went on to do an internship somewhere (if someone knows how this process works, please elaborate on it). From their internship position, they re-matched for the following year into a residency position. Is this correct?

The first year out of med school is called internship (or PGY-1 for "post graduate year one").

Some residency programs require a year of internship that is separate from the residency. (In otherwords, the residency begins at PGY-II). For others, internship and residency is rolled into one.

Radiology, anesthesiology, otolaryngology (ear/nose/throat) and neurology are some that come to mind where an internship with rotations in medicine, surgery and pediatrics (maybe OB too, in some cases) are needed before you are ready for the specialty.

So, matching for one or two shouldn't factor in when judging a match list.

I believe derm also requires one as well? also: is transitional year similar to that of the internship year

Yes, you are right. Also Urology (surgical internship) & Physical Medicine and Rehab (medicine preliminary), and ophthmology (transitional).

And yes, transitional is an internship year.
