Hello everyone thanks for reading!
Basically I have a problem. I'm currently planning on taking a year off from medical school and have already notified my dean and school. They are OKAY with it.
I'm currently a second year on a shortened preclinical and frankly, I wasn't ready for Step 1. I wanted additional time to study for the exam.
I was notified that at my school, a leave of absence means a withdraw from the school which means I cannot sit for the exam until next year at around this time (early January). There is an alternative pathway that means I pay some tuition money and can still remain enrolled until late May of this year to sit for the exam during that time.
I was wondering, do I have to account for all of my time off? I plan to go back to my school and do research for a good portion of this year at about 30 hours/week. I can probably work from February-August if not September. However I want to take some time off starting at the end of September to recoup and restart studying for Step 1. However, I'm worried that if I don't account for every ounce of my time off, that I'll get further red flags than what I already have for taking a year off during medical school.
I'm not looking to enter a super competitive residency (short list would be Family Med, Psych, and Internal) and may consider things like Neuro, etc. Mostly I just want to keep my options open as much as possible.
Thank you!
