Ok so I am new to this whole student doctor thing, but I have a question for all of you.

There is a new dental school in my area that says it will recieve its initial accredidation this fall. Does graduating from a school with initial accredidation have any consequences as opposed to graduating from a school that is already fully accredited?

Any help would be appreciated. It is the only dental school in the state so it would be kinda convenient for me, Im thinking.

Thanks!

I'm guessing you're referring to USN-South Jordan. You shouldn't really worry about it (IMO) because you won't be limited in any way when you graduate, even if they're still under "initial accreditation." I would say go ahead and go there, but that's my opinion. Some on here may think otherwise.

As long as they get their initial accreditation, you will graduate from there as a licensed dentist. Initial accreditation is something every new school goes through. I would not be concerned. If they get their initial accreditation, it's the same as graduating from a school thats been accredited for 100 years as far as getting your license, getting into a specialty, etc.

Awesome thanks guys. I dont know if you have heard anything about the University of Southern Nevada? I dont know how I feel about being part of the second class to ever go through the program. Creighton looks like a great program, you will have to let me know how you like it. Im at the University of Utah and they have a program through Creighton that would be awesome. Its super competitive though.

I think USN will have a very good program, but it will just take a few years to build up their reputation. It's also very expensive, but most private schools are. I didn't go to my USN interview because I had already been accepted, but I think it'll be a great program, and I wouldn't be concerned about being in the second class as long as they have intial accreditation.

Creighton is an awesome school, I'm very excited to be a part of their program. And I think you're referring to the RDEP program where the students do their first year at the U of U. That's what I'll be doing.

Yeah that would save a ton on money. If you dont mind me asking what were your grades/DAT scores like? Im trying to figure out how competitive the RDEP program really is. I have met with Dr. Powell a few times and it seems like it would be a great program.

Sure, I'll graduate with about a 3.8, and I got a 20 on the DAT. Everyone I know that got accepted had >3.6 GPA and >20 DAT. Powell is awesome, and so is Lowder. Make sure to build a good relationship with those two cause it will go a long way.

Yeah they were both awesome when I talked to them. Right now I have like a 3.85 but I dont take the DAT till May. Hopefully I can pull something around a 20 off. Thats really cool.

Why is the University of Utah football player in your picture making the University of Miami hand signal?

I think initial accreditations (really, all accreditation) last like 5+ years so the 4 years you're in school will be fine.

With a 3.85 and a 20, you'll be very competitive.

What if the school did not receive initial accreditation at the time of enrollment for its first year students, but received initial accreditation status after like the first semester of D1, will graduates from this particular school still be considered eligible for licence and practice later on?

They get their initial accreditation before the fall semester starts. ECU for example received their initial accreditation February 4th, so now they are good for 7 years. There has never been a dental school in history to fail it's initial accreditation.

im pretty sure there are dental schools that have failed its initial accreditation since the inception of time. Different schools receive accreditations throughout the year. It all depends on when the school applied for accreditation and how early they filed the paperwork. So it is very possible for a school to receive accreditation after the fall semester starts.

Say what you want, but i read somewhere that every dental school had passed it's initial accredidation, and in the second paragraph of the accredidation page on ECU's website, http://www.ecu.edu/cs-dhs/dentistry/Accreditation.cfm, it states:

"New dental schools, such as the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine, go through an Initial Accreditation process prior to the enrollment of any students. The purpose of the Initial Accreditation is to ensure that the educational program meets the intent of the accreditation standards. Once a program is initially accredited, the program is re-accredited at regular intervals, generally every seven years"

As the above paragraph states, the initial accredidation is prior to the enrollment of any students, so I do not believe they can get accredited after the first semester starts.

At the USN interview, someone asked what is the worst case scenario about initial accreditation. They stated that if the school didn't get initial accreditation, then there was a time limit for them to fix whatever and then reapply. Then they would start in January instead of August.

Exactly what I stated, They will not START school before it is accredited.

How was USN? Did you get to see the facilities at all or get to talk to anyone that would be teaching there?

I liked it. The building is complete on the outside, but not inside. They have another building that is currently being used by pharmacy and nursing students. The dental class will start in there with the course work. The dental building should be ready to go by late fall. We were able to see an area were the companies bidding to supply the school with dental equipment had setup clinic rooms. It was quite impressive. I spoke with a few people who will be there and they are all excited. Now all I need is an acceptance from them.

Yeah hopefully Ill see you there next year then. It is still a little scary to me to go to a brand new school but it will definitely have its advantages. All of the technology should be brand new as well.

@masterlocke18 - Did you get accepted @ USN?

Well, one kid in one of my classes at the U got an 18 AA he was accepted (his dad went there) so that would help out. My dad did not and they told me that a 19 AA, 20 TS, 3.8 BCP, 3.6 overall was not good enough. Its an awesome school though.
