I have enjoyed reading and becoming part of SDN. Having read many of the postings, I have a question re: EC's. I will have good GPA's, MCAT(remains to be seen), great experience,13 years as a paramedic, and good shadowing experience, about 500 hours shadowing D.O.'s. My question, while doing all of this I have maintained a 60 hour work week, what are some other good EC's that adcoms look at favorably? Do I need anymore? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Reality is you are responsible (work/school), matured and experienced (working as a paramedic). Just in itself it should be enough. When I was interviewed, I was pursuing my MBA, and between full time job and then part time MBA, I didn't have time left for anything else. Adcoms didn't seem to mind and I got multiple acceptances. I did have some 200+ hours of volunteering in ER and in Surgery, during my undergrad. Try your best for the MCAT.
Good luck.

Perhaps everyone's experiences with adcoms are different, but in my experience the big interest/questioning from interviewers has been regarding "patient contact." It's not about "volunteering for the sake of volunteering" but about having a host of experiences to make sure you know what you're getting into and can handle the interactions.

I worked as an EMT-Int. for 2 years, volunteered at the trauma center for several years, and was NEVER asked about it in my interviews. (granted, I have a pretty varied resume, with lots of "interesting" items). I was asked about volunteering at a hippotherapy program (i don't think he knew what it was, and probably thought it had to do with helping hippos).

I think you've more than covered the topic... focus on everything else, and best of luck!! :luck:
