I got my MCAT and it was a 27R (9VR, 8PS, 10BS). I have a 3.89 overall GPA and a 3.85 BCPM. My dream school is USF (I currently attend there). I have the research, volunteering, and clinical experience that everybody wants as well. Does anyone even think this is possible with my score? All the other Florida schools are high on my list as well. Just want honest opinions, please.

PM REL or gujuDoc, they would have more info about USF, specifically. I think you have a shot at USF and Miami based only on a cursory examination of your numbers. Your BCMP is low and so is your MCAT, but tons of people get in with low GPA/MCAT combinations. As long as the rest of your app is strong, you have a good shot.

Howdy. USF is also one of my schools of choice (I also attend). The GPA is good, and the MCAT is ok. Similar GPA as mine (slightly higher overall, lower science). I was told by REL that I would be competitive with a 27 coming in. USF is not huge on numbers, and your EC's seem good. Its worth the try! They seem to try to find applicants that have a more humanistic approach in medicine, which is big with me.

Opps, I wrote the wrong BCPM. I didn't think mine was low... my bad!

Is this Rel as in Rel Larkin? I tried to make an appointment to see him and no one ever called me back. I guess I need to try again!

Yes, REL is Robert Larkin. He posts on here as REL. Extraordinarily friendly and helpful, might be a bit busy at this juncture in time though. He always goes by REL Larkin.

How is a 3.85 considered low? (I might be at USF next year to finish my premed reqs.....is it the same deal as a community where you need a 4.0 bcmp to be considered at usf?) That is well above the national average....The mcat isn't that bad either. I think you stand a good chance.....OP..tell me how it works for you..or anyone from USF. I am looking into a postbac premed from either UNF or USF...my undergrad gpa isn't that great..but it wasn't the easiest as majors so i have to bank on doing extremely well after this year...that and I am starting independent research in medical informatics.....with an actual aim to improve stuff. (I already have connections with IBM, Siemens, and a few other places that are willing to listen to my ideas)...You stand a good chance at FSU, Miami, and USF......and if osteopathic doesn't bother you Nova and Lecom-Bradenton might show a little favor towards an instater.

The OP originally stated a BCMP gpa of 3.4 or 3.5. He then modified it to 3.85. Check his posts. His MCAT score, while not terribly bad, is still below average at USF, and probably below the national average.

I believe his name is Robert E Larkin. His username on SDN is REL.

He uses the name REL in real life too. But yes you are right. He has taken his initials and created a nickname for him and goes by the following on his business card

Robert "REL" larkin

That said, I don't think you'd be in a bad position for USF. You should PM him on here or call him. I can PM you his number and email. I'd also advise you to talk with Mrs. jackson, Dr. Williams, and/or Dr. Specter. I'd probably speak with Dr. Specter and Mrs. Jackson for second opinions. Then use Dr. Williams as a last resort cuz he can be intimidating.

soccer,

you have a 3.85 or 3.5 BCPM??? Now I'm confused.

Either way you have a hell of a chance at USF and I wouldn't sweat retaking the MCAT with your GPA and extracurriculars. I'd go ahead and make an appointment with Dr. Stephen Specter as well as one with Mr. Larkin.

If you still want a second opinion you can talk with Mrs. Suzanne Jackson and/or Dr. Marvin "Ted" williams who sits on the admissions committee.

I think you'll be fine and don't have anything to worry about though.

I was guessing with the BCPM of 3.85, I looked and according to AMCAS it is 3.82 BCPM - so thats what I actually have. I accidently wrote the wrong BCPM before and that's why someone said it was low. I do not believe that it is though and I don't think that other people believe that it is as well.

gujudoc- If you could pm me those numbers and email addresses, I would be in your debt. I tried looking all of that up before and just hit dead ends. I was actually going to go down to the med school to make an appointment to talk to someone but an email or phone number would make that easier.

And by the way, I am a girl. Maybe I should do the same thing gujudoc does! I am just a girl who happens to like soccer 😉

Thanks all for your help! Much appreciated!

Sure I will PM right now. Oh and lots of girls love soccer.

A case in point:

A few years ago the first time I took the MCAT, I was working in a lab with a girl who played professional soccer, coached highschool soccer, and had a full scholarship from USF for soccer as well as had the same offer back when she was in highschool from Columbia. There were circumstances to why she chose USF at the time. She had a 30 MCAT, 3.8 GPA and could play like 3 instruments, write literature and poetry and was super multitalented.

The girl was crazy talented and ended up going into acting instead in the end. But yeah soccer was really big with her.

My exroommate also loves soccer and joined intramural soccer near where she lives.

Ok so back to topic, i will PM you information right now.

Soccer,

With your GPA you have an excellent chance at USF and possibly UMiami and FSU as well. I also think you should apply to schools like Rosalind Franklin in North chicago, Drexel (USF COM's dean's former school), Saint Louis University, Georgewashington, EVMS. These are a few that come into mind.

You will get in somewhere that's for sure.

Oh and your MCAT isn't bad. Its not the highest out there and by SDN standards not high, but I know tons of people who got into med school with similar stats. At worst case scenario youd be waitlisted high tier waitlist which means you'd get in but it would be april to june when you'd hear. But that's not saying that that is what will necessarily happen. Your best bet is to talk with the aforementioned who I have now sent you the contacts to via PM. Oh and good luck at Neuroscience 2006. At least you can rest your mind that you won't be wondering about scores when you are in Atlanta. Have some much needed fun!!!

Thanks gujudoc! You are the best! You have been such a big help. If there is anything I can do for you, you know where to find me 😉
