Hello everyone

I am a grade 12 high school student in Canada and my goal is to become a surgeon. Lately, I've been thinking about applying to medical school abroad specifically in Poland, the reason is the competition is fierce in Canada and very few people can get into med school. Hypothetically speaking if I do all my training in Poland and become a fully qualified surgeon and practice in Canada or I decide to do my residency here in Canada. What would be my situation? Is it wise to study abroad? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in Advance

Unfortunately, the American Board of Surgery (ABS) does not offer full credit for foreign surgical training. It was only recently that they have allowed for physicians currently in a US surgical residency to apply for credit for any foreign training, up to a maximum of 2 years; as you can see, the drawback is that you already have to be in a US residency to even apply for the credit and it is not automatically granted. Thus, as noted above, if you wish to work in the US as a surgeon, you really need to have done your residency here or you are facing repeating several years of training.

Going abroad for medical school may still be a viable option for you, although the ability to get into a Canadian residency after doing so is strictly curtailed; it may be less so for a US residency, although spots are getting tighter for non-citizens who trained outside the US. However, if you were to choose this route, I would venture that Poland would not be my first choice. I'd encourage you to look at the UK/Australia and other Commonwealth countries first.

look into the caribbean medical schools, ( SGU, AUC, Ross and Saba) not as dreary as poland and many grads are from and practice in canada
