Hey everyone, i was supposed to take the ndb part1 on december 1st i called the ada to see where i got my center adn they told me that the check i sent didnt' go thru adn now the deadline was past. I sent the thing like 2 months ago and they NEVER tried to notify me so i could do something about it...anyways i was obviously very dissapointed.

So know I am plannign on taking the computerized version hopefully in the first week of jan. do you guys think the computerized version will be any different from the written? i mean it wouldn't be fare to do that but you never know... i hope the question pool bank remains fairly constant as the past exams..I dont know have they already started the computerized part 1 yet and has anyone taken it?!?!??!?!?

My prep is consiting of ALL old exams and dental decks and a very little kaplan for DA which I find very difficult for me. Anyways any feedback would realy help.
Also approxmately how many question do you have to get right on each section to get a score of 75? i'm aiming higher dont worry ! i just want to know about how many are needed to pass!
Im just finsihing up my BDS from lahore, pakistan...anyone from pakistan wanna contact me if they are taking hte boards we could work out some strategies god knows we need it! .....GOOD LUCK EVERYONE

khurram, I don't think the computarized version is up and running yet. In fact it isn't suposse to be ready until summer of 2005!!. This past summer, after the written version, they did the first TRIAL computarized version to selected students. So I think you can sure reschedule your flight 'til next July. 🙁

On the first sticky thread ''Links of interest....'', I have posted links to different threads in which you can find info about the trial version of the computarized part 1. Also in one of those threads is the answer as to how many correct answers you'll need to get a score of 75. Just browse them all.

Look at the positive side, you'll have more time to prepare, and therefore more chances to get a great score!!!

Sorry, and good luck!

Sorry, I just read the other thread about this topic.

hey meggs,
thanks for your links on teh scoring and stuff andi contacted the supervisor of ndb at the ada center and she told me the computerized version would be up and running and available january 2004 she said to contact the ada in the first week to register and if you contact the prometic people who take the exam they can even register you right now for a date but u still have to fill an application to the ada first
thanks again for your help

Khurram, from what I hear, taking the paper based test has a couple of advantages over the computerized version. No one i know has taken the NBDE1 on a comp, but thats what i hear abt part2, so the same probably holds good for part 1 when it starts. For one thing, the paper based test will def be a little less expensive, but maybe thats not an issue for you. I also hear, u tend to score higher on the paper based test.. what the basis for this is, i honestly do not know, but its the reason im giving part 2 on paper as well (besides I can't stare at a comp for hours at a stretch)

i hope the question pool bank remains fairly constant as the past exams..

I gave Part 1 on paper this July... the questions were radically different from the older papers, esp the papers of the 70s and 80s. So pay particular attention to the more recent papers, and take an asprin to your exam center.. i did, and boy was i glad. :|

Im just finsihing up my BDS from lahore, pakistan...

If you're just finishing BDS, would u consider waiting to give the paper test in july? u have the maximum chances of scoring high, plus u'll be in time to apply to all the schools, and your ECE will also be ready then.. just a suggestion, it was what was given to me, and it helped. cheers. 🙂

hey tasha,
what's up..hey i'm in lahore pakistan too....cool...i'm at Lahore medical and dental college how bout u are you at d'mont i have my final prof on december 18th i think we are giving it with the d'mont people as well...see i would rather give the july exam but i wanna give it as soon as possible in jan perferably so i can maybe still apply to boston in time, i know it will be pretty close to the deadlines and i'm sure all the spaces would be taken but i just wanna give it a shot u knwo otherwise i'm gonna have to wait a whole year and i really dont want to do that...but i tihnk for some reason the paper based one would be easier..have u started studying for ndb1 i've been doing it for 4 months now but now my prof has come in teh way and im' really worreid about ortho i dont know anything in that yiiikes....but i wanted to give it december 1st but like i said the prof came in the way...anyways..goodluck with ure prof...i dont know what UHS has in store for us...i hope it's not a messed up paper..i've been giving mcq' profs from baqai..but now i gotta give this essay type which i've never done...and i've studied lived in new york my whole life so i never gave essay type questions over there either..so i'm pretty nervous..anyways take care and good luck

hey....khurram....and others taking up the comuter based test...
i dont think tasha's suggestions should be given any weightage....
here are some explanations for help.....

1. "No one i know has taken the NBDE1 on a comp, but thats what i hear abt part2, so the same probably holds good for part 1 when it starts"
---common thats ridiculous and so discouraging!! just bcos this person doesent know anyone who knows to take the computer based test, doesent mean that the paper based test is advantageous!!! hello tasha, wake up! we are in the modern world!! everything here is computersied! this is just a start..in future, ALL exams will be computerised, so how can afford to be lost in the race, just becos of stereo typed thinking?

2. "I also hear, u tend to score higher on the paper based test.. what the basis for this is, i honestly do not know, but its the reason im giving part 2 on paper as well"
--this is even more a ridiculous statement!! how can any testing agency be so unfair, by making the scoring easy or "higher" in paper based and tougher on the computer based?????
i wish some one can credibly explain this to me so that i can be a millionarrie soon (??) --by sueing the ADA for this!!! hahhaahaha!!

3. "besides I can't stare at a comp for hours at a stretch"
this is discouraging again! how can this be generalised to all??
not everyone have a problem with their eyes......and ADA has no intentions to make people blind by the end of the exam!!

4. "would u consider waiting to give the paper test in july? u have the maximum chances of scoring high, plus u'll be in time to apply to all the schools, and your ECE will also be ready then"
---what ???? wait?? why???? eeks am biting my fingers here!! in such a competitive world, with cut-throat competition why would anyone want to wait and lose a year, just because he or she is advised to use the paper and pencil instead of a computer, so that he or she can score "high"??? hahhaha!! whats hapening in this forum?? i hope henceforth sensible answers be posted here to people's genuine doubts; the forum is intended to exchange "credible" info to help others.....
i feel such replies will confuse the already confused and ambivalent ones!!
guys please dont build up any "hatred" towards the comp based test....the world is being made a better place to live, and things are always developed to make it easy for us....you gotta acclamitise and like it..its for our own good!
good luck!
K'jal.

Kjal..

As Khurram, and anyone else I have tried to help knows, I never intend to discourage.. nor do I force my opinions on anyone. I know quite a few people who have given both the computer based and the paper based test and have just listed what i , i repeat 'I' and my friends consider to be disadvantages and advantages.. i only offered suggestions. In fact, someone i know within the ADA mentioned that it is possible to score higher by giving the paper based exam in July, only because of the sheer number of people giving the exam at that time... this includes a number of regular US dental students who are just giving the exam to pass... this causes the curve to favor the rest of us who are studying to score higher. This is why i suggested it, taking into consideration the fact that Khurram IS STILL in dental school and hence, won't be able to get his ECE done until his final year marks card comes in.. nor can he apply to any of the schools until he has his dental school transcript and degree.

as for the eyesight issue, i have poor vision .. neither u nor i know anything about khurram, i just thought this was a point he might want to consider, in case it poses a problem for him too.

in the end, i think we all just want to help, k'jal.. none of us are here to confuse or complicate matters.. everyone puts forth their view and the people who need help, being adults with common sense weighs everything and then decides what to do... im sure khurram will not follow anyone's advice blindly.

Im glad to see you have great faith in the computerized exam.. im sure your opinion will be of help to a lot of people... but maybe u can find a way to express your opinions without being derisive and insulting to other people.

Tasha

Khurram...

Hi, again! 🙂 Im sorry, but Im not from lahore, I was only quoting u in my post.. im from india, i completed my BDS last year, took this year off, gave part 1 in july and Im gearing up for my interviews and for part 2.

I understand your reasons for giving your exam in Jan.. if your transcript and ECE are ready, and if u feel completely prepared, go for it.. I told u about my best friend who's now in BU in another thread... so u have a chance if u score well!! All the best!

Don't worry about essay type qsts.. i've followed the indian syllabus all my life so essay qsts are the only types i can do! 😀 the key to writing a good essay is to remember that your examiner has to read 100s of papers and will probably just skip through each one.. here are a few tips i hope will help.. none of which are discouraging and confusing, i hope, hehehe 😀

just organize your answer well, split up the entire answer into paragraphs with headings, underline those headings, draw diagrams to illustrate your point, make sure all the info u have is clearly relayed to the examiner... writing a well organized essay with 10 relevant points will fetch u more marks than writing down a 100 points in one long continuous paragraph which no one will take the time off to read completely.

hope this helps.. take care, and best of luck!
T.

hi tasha,
dont worry i didn't get discouraged or confused by ure advice😉 i was jus askin around for some help like everyone else and i value ure opinion..thanx a lot for the tips on the essay questions...i'm plannig to underline key points and headings and all that stuff i've been practicing by diong all teh old univesity questoins so i hope that helps and i do realize that a lot of the time they just skip thru the papers and i've even heard thta sometimes they just count how many papers u have hahahaha and giveu score on that😱 but i'll be sure to make the key points obvious and i'm sure i'll get thru allright...yeah i'm gonna give the computer version i think just so taht i might have a chance of getting in u know i know exactly what ure saying about the curve thing for the computer based cuz less people are giving it...oh well whacha gonna do i gues i can't rely on other people to get me a good grade haha...but i can always give it again if i dont do so well...i'm pretty sure i wont be able to get in this time anyways..lets see when my diploma and marks sheets actaully come they always seem to take there sweet ass time here in pakistan😀 take care
see ya

tasha...thanks (!!) for ackowledging my opinion...and also thanks for "teaching" me about my interpersonal skills, which i never learnt all my life in south africa!

You can withdraw from the exam, if you are just not planning to go for it ( without notifying them) that's ok too I guess ( Iam not sure ) It wont work against you that's for sure nor will it affect your future interviews but if you withdraw well within the time period you will be re-imbursed some part of the fee..
They do have a specific number for cancellations dont they ?

Yes, you can skip the exam and you don't even have to call anybody...It will not be counted. It will not show in your records... You will get some money back ` $40 ... I called the ADA in July to find out because I had some visa issues and I was unable to take the exam....
