I have always got the impression that procedure based specialities earned more because procedures were reimbursement at a far better rate than E&M codes.

But why is non-interventional radiology so well paid?
Why does ortho earn so much more than general surg?

Because reimbursement is a mysterious, nonsensical system. There is not accounting for the amount of time or work or training involved in doing a certain procedure when figuring out how much to reimburse for it. They claim there is, but one look at the rates and you'll see it often is not.
