Well at my university (smaller state school) there are no research labs. There are however, research professors who conduct classes specifically designed toward research (no publishing) and they also do their own research on the side.

This next semester I am taking one such course. It is one course specifically pointed toward research. In the class I am planning on doing research on osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. Now, Although there won't be a publication I get out of the research, I do have to present my findings to about 300 people including members of the staff as well as my peers.

My question............. although this is research, will the fact that I am not getting a publication out of it cause any school to not consider it research experience? Regardless, I will be taking the course because it is something I truly want to do. Up to this point though, I haven't had the opportunity to do any research which is something I would like to explore a little. Plus it wouldn't look too bad on my app of course.👍

I don't want the course to look like I just did a research paper that took 5 days and I put it down on my app as research experience. That would be stupid. However, because this is a full semester thing I wasn't sure if it counted or not.

You're really not expected to have publications as an undergrad. If you do, its because you have a very generous principle investigator: Not necessarily because you're a superstar researcher. Most of papers authored by undergraduates are usually going to be an expansion or variation on something one of their professors is doing, you need to remember. Poster presentations should help you, definitely. The important thing is that you're able to show that you've experienced the process of doing research, and understand what it takes to see a project through from IRB approval to data analysis to writing the manuscript.

Ok that makes sense. I was also worried because I don't have a P.I but that shouldn't matter. I was also hoping to do some research on the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. I can't decide what to do yet. I figure I will put the experience on my app and hope for the best.
