I'm applying to med school this year, but should I also apply to post-bacc programs during the med school application cycle? I'm a biology major and will graduate soon. Which post-bacc's do you recommend? 3.0 GPA and a 25 MCAT. I wish there was a post bacc program in Texas, but they dont have any.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I don't understand.

It seems to me the point of a postbac is to get ready for med school. So either you're ready to apply for med school (in which case you apply to med school), or you're not (in which case a postbac might be one of the appropriate next steps).

In your position, I'd apply my @$$ off to med schools near and far, and set aside the postbac option for later, to be used if things turn out sub-optimally.

hey bubba- im not doing a postbacc but was cruising thru the threads and saw your post.

I think you should apply to a couple postbacc programs; im assuming you've gotten your premeds reqs finished? i think the biggest thing is bringing that GPA to 3.3 and higher and the MCAT to around a 29.. to be competitive for med school.

but good luck and you can search through this section of the forum. there's a ton of threads about postbacc programs.

to me, it seems like he wants something to fall back on in case he doesn't get into med school this year so he's asking for advice on whether he should apply to post-bacc programs this year....

the point of postbacc to me is two folds: 1) get the prereqs done 2) get my GPA up and competitive.. he seems to be looking for the 2nd one.

yo- NREMT-B National Registry? I just actually passed mine. got a 73%.. whew close enough but I guess I'm NREMT-B too.

Georgetown's SMP. I find it to be by far, the most "prestigious" program that can really help a student get into med school. But you've gotta kick major butt.

Zoom, thanks for mentioning that; I see it better now... I suppose then I'll go with what I said about using a PB if things don't go well... though it should be noted that, depending on the GPA and the MCAT score, another excellent thing to do with the extra year is to get work (lab, ED Tech, nearly anything) in a medical setting. That'll demonstrate the commitment and the sense of it being a well-informed decision.

Still, I'm an optimist. I say go for it, and don't let your fall-back plan turn into your plan. 😀

(Zoom: congrats on the Registry!)

you need to kick major butt on the mcat to get into georgetown smp.if you have under a 29(maybe 28 although dont count on it) its almost impossible to get in. You need to retake the mcat get around a 30 and get your gpa up a little-freekingzooming is pretty accurate.Unless you are a URM and have special circumstanes etc.. then give it a shot
