Hi everyone,

So I'm currently a senior in undergrad and I thought of Physical Therapy a bit late in college. I currently have a 3.3gpa, but that'll be going up soon because I'm going to work my butt off this semester to get those grades I need to bring it up. I was thinking of applying to a masters program for exercise science. I was thinking of doing it not only to help my application, but to also learn more about what might be entailed in PT school as I have not taken any exercise-related classes or kinesiology classes whatsoever. All I've taken has been most of the core classes that the schools I've looked at are recommending. Other than that I also know of one school that I've looked into that doesn't require you to do the GRE if you've done your masters. Would you guys suggest that I apply to a master's program? Or should I take a few months off, study for the GRE, and then try applying to PT schools immediately?

Thank you! Any help is truly appreciated! 🙂

Second option. This question comes up every few weeks. A master's will not help your application much.

As someone with a masters, I can personally attest it did not help my application. I had to go back and redo prereqs and undergrad courses and THAT made the difference. Plus retaking pre reqs is way cheaper than a masters. I don't feel that having a masters in exercise science changes your job search or income level at all (if you happen to not got PT school). Just spend some time retaking any pre reqs that aren't your best work. You can even take exercise physiology if interested too. Study for the GRE, get a bunch of observation hours. That's a much more focused approach to an end goal of DPT.
