Hi, this is my first thread on the SDN forum and its because I am confused about the GPA calculation for my specific situation.

I am going into 4th year Biology and will be applying for AADSAS in the next cycle (2013) as I want to beef up my EC and shadowing experience as well as studying DAT enough to destroy it.

My undergrad story is considerably deviant from the norm so I wanted to get advice on how the GPA calculation works.

From 2006-2007 I attended a university different from the one I am currently attending and got F for Bio I, C+ for Bio II, C for Math, B for Stats, B for Chem I, C- for Chem II and B for Psychology. I know, the grades that I got for this year is down right pathetic however it was mostly due to personal/family crisis. I retook the Bio I in the summer and got B-.

Then, I took a year off from 2007-2008 cause I needed some break from all the difficulties that I went thru. Instead of going back the the same university that I have negative memory associated with, I wanted to have a new start from different university so I started as freshman again in the different current Univ.

I studied my ass off since then and most of the grades that I got after moving to new university is above A. Overall GPA in current univ as of now (going into 4th year) is 3.88. sGPA and BCP GPA of current univ is above 3.9

So here comes my question. When they are calculating the sGPA, BCP GPA, and cGPA, they are combining the GPA from both university? For example, considering this is true, my BCP GPA would be only 3.0. Is this the GPA that will be presented to the committee of dental admission ? Or is it that they usually prioritize the GPA of most recent university.

Thanks and any input will be appreciated.

they combine both and don't prioritize over recent marks

Does it mean that my GPA and application would be considered identical to applicants who went to single university and acquired B (3.0) across the science courses even though by the time I apply, my 4 recent years of GPA would be almost all A's (BCP GPA and
sGPA of last 4 years is nearly 4.0)?

I am wondering this because I have read many posts of recent up-hill trend in GPA is what is important than the GPA of 4-5 years ago. In fact, this is the main motivation that encourage people to not give up in the "Sub 3.0 GPA" thread.

I was looking further into this and found that AADSAS has college/university GPA.

It is described as "GPAs are reported for each college/university you attended" so I guess this is good thing for me?

The gist of my situation is that I went to two university. First univ, which I attended for a year, I did horrible with cGPA around 2.333. The second and current univ that I am attending from first year again, I have cGPA of 3.92.

However, when I calculated the combined GPA of both school, my cGPA goes down to 3.45.

I am fearing that the dental school won't even look at the fact that I went to two university and my GPA is lowered because of 1st year in first university.

Any input is appreciated! Thanks guys.

AADSAS does show your GPA by university, however, the overall GPA, sGPA, BCP gpas that everybody on here talks about will combine both transcripts.

Start making connections with the adcoms at the schools you'll be applying to soon! They can give you more insight into how your application will be evaluated. Include the information you provided here about switching institutions, etc. in your personal statement. You should be fine assuming your DAT scores are solid. Remember, Cs are required in pre-reqs, so re-take any necessary courses you scored C- below in.
