Before I go any further, let me put on the record that I did a search on this topic and came up with mixed results. Furthermore, this question is somewhat specific to me. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Anyways, I just got the results back from my CBC and it found a speeding ticket I recieved in Ohio a year and a half ago which came up as a misdemeanor. First of all, I had no idea speeding tickets could even qualify as misdemeanors. Even if I did know that, I would never have thought this one would have, I was only 15mph over. Therefore, I did not disclose it on any applications whether it was AMCAS or secondary or whatever. Is this going to be a problem for me? I'm thinking either because I "lied" on an application or just because I have a misdemeanor to my name.

I try not to think of myself as the typical neurotic pre-med even though I may be acting like it right now. I'm half way to freaking out about this. Has anybody had an experience with this sort of thing? Thanks.

I got this advice, and it is extremely important. To all you premeds out there who haven't applied yet: CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR SPEEDING TICKETS ARE MISDEMEANORS! They can be in many states. You can order the same check med schools use, so you may want to look into that if you are worried (costs money but totally worth it).

To the OP, I actually do not know what will happen. However, it is on there, and it is going to be released to schools 10 days after you get the results back, so contact all of your schools quick and explain the situation.

Usually, having a misdemeanor is not a deal-breaker, and I would imagine a speeding ticket misdemeanor would not be looked on too negatively. However, you did not disclose it, so it may look suspicious. Schools have the right to rescind an acceptance over this. But don't freak out too much (I'm not saying they will). Contact your schools (calling probably better than email) and explain the situation. Do this ASAP. An honest mistake over a speeding ticket may gain you a sympathetic ear.

And you mentioned the state of Ohio. Are you from there or were you just passing through? If you are not from there and didn't know the laws, that may help your case. But still, all you can do now is contact the schools and let them know.

Good luck. I'm sure it will work out ok.

Thanks for your response, I sent an e-mail to the director of admission because it said to notify her in writing of any issues. If this comes back to bite me in the ass I honestly don't know what I will do.

I don't know the laws in Ohio, but I had a speeding ticket that was recorded as 15+ mph over (the cop was actually being nice to me by doing this rather than recording my real speed). Anyways, I did traffic school to ensure the ticket would not increase my insurance rates.

Would traffic school reduce the misdemeanor? You may want to look into it. My ticket did now show up on my background check.

Hey did you ever resolve this issue? I have almost the same issue. I have a speeding ticket on my CBC from 2004 when i was 16! for speeding between 5 and 10 mph over the speed limit. I also never disclosed this because i forgot i even got one back then. I would like to know how you resolved your issue.

1. Was your ticket a misdemeanor?
2. Ticket is still on your record 7 years later? Whoa.

Nobody gives a **** about speeding/driving tickets (excepting DUIs/running someone over). Just explain it honestly and everything will be fine.

It was a year and half ago, the traffic school ship has sailed.

OP, if it hasn't been resolved I can tell you the same thing happened to me. After I was notified by Certiphi I called both the Dean of Admissions, and Student Affairs at the school I had been accepted to. In the end it worked out, but because of it my application had to be re-reviewed by a disciplinary committee to finalize my acceptance. Honestly besides explaining it there isn't a whole lot you can do about it now. Since I am assuming you just "paid the fine" (as I did) you pled guilty in absentia, so you can't even get a lawyer to get it reduced or expunged (I tried). You just have to remember it, and report it ahead of time from now on. Was one of the most stressful 4 weeks of my life.
