Hello all,

I just completed my freshman year at a CC in Illinois, and I am moving to California for my sophomore year. I will be attending a CC in California for a year, then I'll be transferring to one of the UC schools.

I have already completed General Bio and Chem I, along with other classes that I needed to take in order to transfer to a 4-year as a Bio major (Soc, psych, English I & II, and a couple of history courses).

Fall
Calc I
Cellular&Molecular Bio
Either Intro to OChem (This is the only OChem class offered) or Chem II

Spring
Calc II
OChem/Chem II
?

My question is, what class(es) should I take during the Spring semester to fill out my schedule?

Take Chem II before Orgo. That's the general progression.

I'd take some English or Humanities class to round it out. Maybe a psych or sociology class since some med schools require that.

Thank you for the reply.

That's what I figured, I signed up for Chem II for the Fall. So I'll end up with Calc II, Orgo, Ethics, and one more class in the spring. Are there any specific sociology or psych classes in addition to the intro courses that I already took that would be beneficial?

I agree with Chem2 before Ochem. You don't really need Chem2 for Ochem but it's nice to get general chem out of the way.

Make sure you do extra well in all your classes. Transferring to a UC is really competitive. They give priority to California Community College students first, then CSU students, then other UC students, then out of state CC students. Even though you are coming to California and will attend a CC there, you'll still be considered an Out of State applicant due to your grades in Illinois. So it'll be harder for you.

I'm not trying to scare you but I think it's best you know this now before you find out later. Just work hard.

That's what I was thinking, OChem is less of a time commitment based strictly on time in the classroom, so it'll be easier to take four classes in the Spring.

And actually, I'll be considered a CCC student due to technicalities. Here's an excerpt from UCSD's Transfer Admission Requirements page:

  • California community college applicants
To be considered a California community college (CCC) student, you must meet all 4 of these conditions:

  • Be enrolled at 1 or more CCCs for at least 2 terms, excluding summer sessions, and
  • Attend a CCC as the last college before being admitted to UC San Diego, and
  • Complete at least 30 semester UC-transferable units (45 quarter units), and
  • Be in good standing during your last regular term.
I'll be attending my school during the Fall and Spring, so I'll meet the first requirement. I'll meet the second requirement since I'll be transferring after this coming Spring semester. For the third requirement, I'll make sure that all of the classes I take are UC-transferrable, since I'll be taking 30 or 31 units during my two semesters at my CC.

But I'll be working extra-hard regardless of my applicant status! I appreciate your input JonnyL, thank you.

Okay good. Also do a research on TAG which guarantees you admission to a specific UC as long as you fulfill the requirements.

Take as many GE's as you can before you transfer. Also, take general chemistry 1 and 2, biology 1 and 2, statistics and calc, and maybe physics 1 & 2.

Definitely save ochem for after you transfer, and maybe physics too. If you major in a science, you should have plenty of upper division science classes to round out your UC work.

I'd definitely like to save physics for post-transfer. Exactly what course is Bio II? Pardon my lack of knowledge, advisors at my school are literally clueless. Also, is Calc II a requirement, or can I take Calc I and then Stats?

Bio II is usually Ecology, evolution, etc.

Depending on which UC you want to transfer to as a bio major, Calc II and Ochem are required before transfer. I know for UCLA and Cal they automatically reject you if you don't have first semester O Chem. and they both require one year of Calc for Bio transfer.

Do you know the name of the CCC you're going to be attending? Use:
www.assist.org and you can see which classes you need to take before transferring to a specific UC and the classes equivalent to those courses offered at your CCC.

That website is VERY helpful. Thank you very much. As for Bio II, does this mean that I'll have to take both 154 and 155 prior to transfer?

yes.

Here are the transfer requirements for Bio major for UCLA.

http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/lsmajors/life_sci.htm

1 year Bio with lab
1 year general chem
1 semester ochem <--- very important. I've seen people get rejected by only missing this.
1 year calculus

So with this Fall/Spring schedule, I'll meet all of the requirements for UCLA, correct?

Fall
Cellular Molecular Bio
Calc I
Chem II

Spring
Botany (154)
Zoology (155)
Calc II
Orgo

Yes. And you should have all your GE's completed. At CCC's there is what is called IGETC or general education classes that each CCC's have in agreement with the UCs. The UC's say that they don't require it to be finished before transfer but you'll most likely be rejected if you don't complete it because the UCs want you in and out as fast as possible, and delaying your GE classes will take you longer to graduate. Also, you'll be less competitive because most applicants finish it anyway.

You should look up the website for your CCC and they should have their IGETC courses listed.

ALSO: there's a foreign language requirement. If you don't have proof of at least 2 years of high school foreign language with a C or higher, you need to take a foreign language class at your CC. Otherwise, it's auto-rejection.

Ah yes, I was aware of the IGETC. I have all of those courses completed with the exception of the math course, but Calc I will satisfy that. And I will have completed all of the major-specific courses required/recommended except for Calc-based physics. I'm hoping that won't hinder me too much.

I completed three years of Spanish in high school, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll have to get a copy of my HS transcript or paperwork from my previous CC so I can show it though.

Thank you again. I'm confident that I'll meet the TAG requirements for UCD, UCSC, and UCSB, so I'll most likely only apply to UCLA without the guaranteed transfer.

Good luck. Unfortunately they limited only one TAG per student now. I think that's what I'm hearing from my friends.
