  1. Pre-Pharmacy

Hi, I am a senior in highschool trying to get into a school for pre-pharmacy. I live in Pennsylvania and I currently applied at Temple and Wilkes. They both have 6 year programs. My question is: I was always thinking I would go into business, so I didn't load up on science courses. I have taken Bio 1(9), Intro to Chem.(10), Ecology(11), and Chem 1 (12) this year. My classmates that want to go into pharmacy have A.P. Chem, nuclear organic chem, etc. So am I screwed with only these science courses? Will colleges even accept me with this?If accepted, will I be able to handle pre-pharm chemistry courses? Like for organic chemistry in college, will I be way overwhelmed because I didn't take nuclear organic in highschool? I have a 3.5 GPA and top 25% in my class. Sorry for the rambling, I'm just so unsure of if I will succeed without the beefed up science. Thanks.

my gpa plummetted when i go from a small classroom size (hs) to a big classroom size (univ); from thirty to a thousand from all states

Have you tried corresponding with the admissions offices of Temple and Wilkes? 0+6 programs out of high school tend to have excellent support staff because they understand high school students lack the depth of knowledge as well as sufficient exposure to the world of pharmacy to make an informed decision about their career. I would definitely talk to your high school adviser and see if you can use them as a resource to get you in touch with the right people. With a 3.5 GPA and good EC's, I think you might have a chance. 0+6 programs are designed to prep you with science coursework the first two years anyway. No matter what, high school AP courses and so called pre-pharm chemistry courses just don't hold water against a 4-year institution course, i'll vouch for that any day. So don't worry about it =) Focus on what you can and don't worry about the rest. Good luck with that =)

Hi, I am a senior in highschool trying to get into a school for pre-pharmacy.
I was in the same situation when I applied for the 6-year program at NSU. I had taken actually one less science than you (ecology) when I applied. When I got into school I realized that I still knew a lot more than most people that were in my classes. Not to mention I am doing very well in pharmacy school now. Dont be scared about the classes you've taken, the two years of science intense undergrad will prep you well.

I don't know much about 6 year programs, but I would assume they are basically 2 years of prereqs and then 4 year pharm school. I never took anything close to nuclear chemistry (or anything besides basic chem and bio) in highschool and I am fine. I'm not in pharmacy school, I am taking my Sci/Math prereqs and yes I work very hard...but you'll be fine as long as you work hard. If you get lost there are usually plenty of resources for students: help from the professor, supplemental books, our school also has a math lab, chemistry lab, physics lab, etc. for free tutoring. Don't sweat it...just be prepared to work.

But if you like science then I'm glad you are going into pharmacy and not business. I always loved chemistry in highschool (and middle school actually), but I went the easy route and got a BBA...and now here I am, 25 years old, going back to school again...lol. This time it is WAY more interesting to me. 👍 YOU CAN DO EET!

if a college doesn't have pre-pharmacy as an indicated major, can i still go there and take the required prerequisites and then transfer to a school of pharmacy? If I did this, what would i indicate as my major?

My school has a pre pharmacy curriculum, but not an actual declared major. I declared Chemistry. You should be fine to choose Biology or Chemistry...or something else similar.

lol your high school offered nuclear o-chem?

Mine didn't even offer O-Chem.

Pre-pharmacy is actually not a major; it's just a designation. You can take your pre-reqs anywhere. If you don't have a degree than you just don't put anything.
