Sorry if this has been asked, I did not see it. I am a pre med student and I am about 99 percent sure I want to be an EM physician over other specialties. I am seeing some things about fellowships like for peds or toxicology and other EM fellowships. I was always under the impression (even by ER doctors I work with) that a fellowship is not required for EM physicians. Am I under the wrong impression, is a fellowship required for EM physicians or optional? Is it hard to get a job without a fellowship?

I want to work in a level 1 or 2 trauma center that takes care of kids and adults (like the one I am currently a scribe at). I do not want to work in a childrens ER or a big city like New York or Chicago. I want to stay in FL, the biggest city would possibly be Orlando or Miami but I would actually prefer to work in my hometown which is not that big of an area like Orlando or anything. However, anywhere in FL would be fine with me.

Thank you. I know this is planning way ahead but I would just like to know sooner rather than later since it could add a few years to my training.

I also posted this in the EM residency spot just as an FYI but I did not know how frequently people looked at those posts.

Multiple threads of the same topic get people mad.+pissed+

To answer your question:
-Focus on getting into medical school.

Chances are you will change your mind.

Or try this: http://bit.ly/1a2REz3

Fellowship not required. Not hard to get a job without one.that might change in the decade it will take you to reach that point. Get into med school then worry about this. I know many EM residents who still don't know whether they will do a fellowship or where they will work after residency.

It's pointless to think about this now.

Sorry about posting 2 threads but there was barely anything for EM residency so it did not look like a lot of people looked at those posts even though apparently they do. So at least I know for future reference.

& I do not think I will change my mind even though a lot of med students do. I work in an ER as a scribe and I have shadowed other specialties/talked to them. Also, as previously mentioned, I wanted to know this for future reference because it's nice to have an idea of how long you will be in residency for/fellowship if needed. Plus, I have very good stats so I feel like there is a good chance my hard work will land me a spot in a DO or MD school.

Lastly, I did try using google thank you very much. I worded it in numerous ways and a bunch of fellowships for different hospitals popped up. The only other things that popped up were pages that were steps on how to be an EM doctor and one said a fellowship was required and the other said it was an option. Since they were contradicting, I figured I would ask people who knew.

These forums are supposed to help people btw, if you want to post a link to google or something, then you probably should not bother replying at all. It's a waste of my time reading your reply or your time writing it. Unless as a pre-med student you don't have anything better to do with your time.

Mt Kilimanjaro: That other post was not meant for you btw. But thanks for the link. I know it is early to think about but I like kinda having an idea if what my future may be and then changing things as needed. I just really did not want to do a fellowship on top of residency but I would if I had o.

Who says I am a Pre-Med? Don't trust my information, as far as I am concerned I don't live in the Cheese Kingdom either.👍
I helped you though.

Mr Avante you did not help at all.

& You are acting very immature and young so I am going to assume you are a pre-med. hopefully you will mature more and become more helpful before you actually go to med school.

Seriously. I don't have an answer for you because I have nooo idea if a fellowship is required to go the EM route but I don't think there is anything wrong with asking right now just to see where you are heading. Good for you to respond to douchey answers like that one. I have been seeing those smart ass remarks all over SDN. I guess we just need to realize that it is probably a way for them to feel confident about themselves.

Thanks rosaceae. I was just finding very contradicting information and I was not getting good info looking it up. & I have noticed them a lot to on other people's threads (because I do not post many) & it is complete unneccesary.

Thanks thesauce. Do you think it is going to change soon or something? Hopefully if it does change, it changes after I finish my residency. I am hoping to start in 2015, I am applying next year

to you. I just didn't realize how committed you were.
Fellowship for EM? Well, there is not a concrete answer to your question because it varies from program to program. I heard from EM at Johns Hopkins that a fellowship (International) is very important to them. So, If JH is your fave institution fellowship is the way to go!
