Should I enter my school's honors program or stay in the normal college?

Honors College:
More liberal BA degree
Senior Thesis
Small class sizes

Current Bio/Pre Med:
More science upper divisions
don't have to move 1 hour north to HC campus
large classes (dont enjoy)

Thanx for your insight!!!

Other than moving, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't do honors. You'll learn a lot more, enjoy your experience in college, and probably end up being a more competitive applicant.

Thats how it looks to me too, but the dean seems to think that this is what top tier med school look for AND NOT students with unnecessary upper level science classes or classes that I may have in med school (immuno., medical bacteriology, etc.). What do you think of her reasoning?

I did the honors college at my school, overall it was worth it but you should look carefully at what you will get out of it and what will be asked of you. I am a humanities major, so this wasn't a concern for me; I also got a full scholarship and a fully paid internship through the honors college, so I can't complain. However, the thesis is a much bigger pain in the a** than I thought it would be, this is my last year and I am all done with classes but because I haven't finished my thesis yet (and won't until the fall, after the MCAT) I can't graduate. The extra attention can be good and bad, I go to a large state U so it is nice to feel like there are profs who really know who you are and care if you succeed or not (if only because it makes their program look good if you do), but it also means that those individuals have a lot more control over your education and you have to stay in their good graces. Good luck with your decision!

I had both honors program and lots of upper level science classes. If you?re into the humanities at all, the honors program will liven up your studies, and, as a side benefit, it looks good on your application.

I started in the honors program @ my school. It not a good experience for me, as they were unorganized and I subsequently elected not to renew my honors scholarship and left the program. I believe that they can be very benificial, just make sure you know a lot about yours before beginning it. Mine looked good on the surface, but there were actually not many choices in classes offered, and I often had to end up doing independant study to stay retain my scholarship. My suggestion would be to find others in the same major/career goals and ask them about their experiences with the honors program...they will be able to give the best advice.
