Hi, I have another question for y'all:

1. If the mother of a 3 y/o boy comes in and tells you she's wanting to get a pet dog for her son, what do you say? Basically, do you encourage her to get a "gentle dog and hope that it teaches responsibility," or do you encourage her to "be careful because dog bites, regardless of breed, are most likely to occur from the child's own dog."

I can't recall where I came across this question 😉 but would appreciate everybody's thoughts on the most appropriate answer of the two.

Thanks!

I'd go with- "be careful because dog bites, regardless of breed, are most likely to occur from the child's own dog.". Even the most gentle breeds can bite- think about it from a dogs perspective, there are only so many times a three year old can pull its tail before it gets pissy. By the way, that is a really odd question.

I'd say neither, the kid is too young to have a dog... a dog teaching a kid responsibility at age 3?? but i didn't know that dog bites most likely occur from the owner's own dog

yeah, what an ODD question

I agree with you completely. Instinctually, that was my first answer. However, he didn't give that as an option. I figured what I chose was the lesser of two evils.

See what I mean about how Behavioral Science sucks??!!??

I went ahead and put the option about most dog bites are from the kid's own dog.

Who knows?

I suppose it's probably true that most dog bites are from your own dog, but I'm wondering at what point in medical school this was covered.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say it was somewhere between embryology and learning the intricacies of secondary messenger systems.

now that i think about it, this would be the perfect example (albeit, a stretch) for reaction formation... the mom didn't want the kid (got knocked up in the back of a CHEVy... like a herpes virus) but had him anyway, and had a recent stressor (dad left maybe???) and now instead of admitting how she truly feels, she's buying the kid a dog!!

any of the answer choices say something about asking the mom more about the kid? or the family?

i'm starting to see 8 fingers patch, 8 fingersss i tell ya!! :meanie:

I think we learned about that during the dog lab at our school. (totally kidding for the three of you who got the joke)

All I know is that if they ask what is the most likely infection, put Pasteurella.

If anybody should know the answer to a dog question, it should be you. You are a dog, after all.

Agreed. But I am a very large and ferocious dog who eats babies as snacks. carry on.

Jalby,

Thank you for the picture-link. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!

So how many kittens did you kill today??

Hard to know an exact number. I did eventually have to buy a pet cemetary.

I'm killing a kitten right now all over my keyboard.

I highly recommend buying the plastic keyboard guard. I learned the hard way after purchasing several new keyboards. 👎

They're high.

But, for this question exclusively, to save your ass from a lawsuit, of course you would say be careful. WTF?

And what mother 'wants to get a pet dog for a 3 year old'. The day you see a 3 year old scooping dog $hit and writing checks for the vet bills is when it's a cold day here in hell. Its gonna be mom's dog.

I can't wait to put ppl like this asleep when I'm a gas doc.
🙄
