I was accepted into UMD and already gave the first security deposit. However, there is a chance I may still get an interview from BU. Is it unethical to send BU a letter of interest/intent?

It's not unethical to send a letter of interest. It would be unethical to send a letter of intent if you have already sent one to another school. If you haven't then either letter should be fine. Simply state that you were accepted elsewhere but would prefer to attend their school instead. Talk about why you would be a good fit for their program then direct the email to admissions and possibly the admissions director. Good luck!

Or should I just stick to Maryland?

Go to Maryland. It's cheaper, isn't it? Prestige means very little in dentistry, and even if it mattered, BU wouldn't be considered more prestigious than UMD (I think UMD was the first dental school in the US, not that it matters).

No school is worth the extra money unless you have other reasons for wanting to stay in that area.

No, if anything you have leverage.
"I already have an acceptance, but I would rather go to your school because x,y,z and I will attend your school if given the opportunity"..
As long as you didn't send a letter of intent to UMD, I don't see why it would be unethical if you sent one to BU.

Send your letter of interest! If you're really passionate about attending BU, you should do anything you can to get there.
I paid 2 deposits to my second choice (about $3000) and I still let my top 1 know that if given the opportunity, I would go to their school. I've sent LOIs and update emails and eventually got in.

That said, if this is a question about which school you should go to.. I agree with others above and say that UMD might be a better choice financially

DId you ever let your top choice know that you received an acceptance from another dental school?

That’s like saying that you have a date at the altar with Mary Lou/Irwin, but, in a heartbeat, you would drop her/him, if the recipient of your interest would accept your invitation.

Nope. At this point, most spots are filled. If you tell them that you're wanted at another school, they'll likely tell you "OK GO THERE THEN". There are so many other people on their waitlist that they could get. Trying to coax them into making a decision will do more harm than good.

Also, at this point, different dental schools can talk to each other about their applicants. They can easily get information about your status by contacting other schools. You dont need to call them to tell them that you're being offered a spot somewhere else

I disagree. if anything, receiving an acceptance from a different school and stating how you are still interested in going to your #1 shows your commitment. They really like that.
