that's up to the individual FP program to decide, and would be based on the documentation maintained and provided by your ER program.

so plan for them NOT to accept it unless you hear otherwise.

If I complete a ER residency and then decide to do a FP residency will I receive any credit towards the FP residency?

It is my understanding that you have to complete 24 consecutive months in FP to complete a FP residency, so the most you could transfer would be 12 months. Just courious, why would you want to do that? There are combined FP/ER programs and ER fellowships for FP grads.

Actually it is not up to the individual program. The RRC has standard guidelines that regulate what would be given credit.

Besides what the RRC dictates, as stated before you must do at least two years in the same FP program. Therefore the best possible scenario would be a minimum of two years in the FP program. I don't think you would get credit for a whole year of FP based on your ER residency.

If you truly want to do family medicine, I would start a FP residency, try to get credit for what you can, but in the long run not worry about it. Most FP residencies are not too terribly demanding. It would just suck having to do residency over again. However, if FP is what you want it will be worth it in the end.

the individual programs assess what rotations the person may have completed and their competence (based on the programs documentation.) Based on what they see, the programs have the discretion of notifying the RRC and allowing them to "get credit". The RRC does have ultimate final say, but it is up to the discretion of the program to ask for it.

We had a person transfer from an IM program who came in as an R2 in FP. We looked over her rotations and documentation and she got credit for most of first year, and a couple of other rotations that would've occurred second or third year based on her IM training - but not a whole year's worth. As other posters have mentioned you must complete the final 24 months of an FP program at the same program (which is what this IM person did.)

anyway, with the original question...pick the specialty that you want to practice. don't go into one with the plan of possibly switching to another one later. i advise students all the time if you are ambivalent about a career, don't jump into one. take a step back and reassess.
