But really, I bet everybody is doing dentistry b.c it looks prestigous or for the money..Dont give me that bs, that you really like teeth.

You were aware that they give you a DEA license right?

To be honest, teeth don't fascinate me at all. I just find many dental procedures exciting and fun. At the same time it's great how dentistry can leave positive impacts on other people's lives, whether it be aesthetic work or pain relief. IMHO, dentistry is not a prestigious profession, but it is a well-respected profession. Dentistry is also a financially rewarding profession... you will always have a job security, potential to make a pretty good living, and also great autonomy. However, with high cost of education, it takes a few years to achieve these financial rewards (unless you go to really affordable state school or your parents pay for school. =p).

Shadow some private dentists, and ask yourself if you want to spend the rest of your life as a dentist. If yes, then go for it. Many dentists I've talked to love it.

Best of luck,

Dentalist

personal statement time?

I tell ya what, this one is on me. I like dentistry because it will give me the ability to improve others personal appearances, self-esteem, and healthcare and it will help me to line my pockets with lots of money. Yes part of my desire is due to money, if dentistry paid $40,000 a year I would not do it.

However, I also and equally like the fact that I will not have to work as much as a physician and that I will be able to help most patients the very day that they come to my office as opposed to physicians who are unable to immediately provide relief in most instances. For ex. If you need a surgery do you think a physician will close the office right then and drive over to the hospital and perform surgery? Not quite.

So for me its less hours, more professional satisfaction and lots of MONEY.

Do I love teeth? Not really. Would I really enjoy improving individuals teeth? Hell yea. Its awesome and I look forward to pursuing cosmetic dentistry, of course its all cosmetic really right?

WHAT???

did you just say that dentistry is not a prestigious profession?

Kid did you just get off the boat?

What is more prestigious than being a surgeon? BEING A COAL MINER?

Some of the ignorant statements on SDN by these young kids really makes me want to puke.

Why do people think that kids go to dental school because they love teeth?

Does an orthopedic surgeon love bones, tendons, and ligaments? Does a plastic surgeon love silicon and adipose tissue? Does a dermatologist love skin? Does a radiologist love x-rays?

I always get asked if I like teeth...what the ?

Its not about the teeth...it has to do with the healthcare aspects of it, working with my hands, autonomy, job security, prestige, providing a good life for myself and my family, etc...

If I could get this by working on elbows, I'd do the same thing. It has nothing to do with teeth, but has everything to do with what comes with the territory.

Well said...although that should be painfully obviously to everyone who is actually seriously considering dentistry.

If you are applying and don't feel that way then a more fun and much quicker way to lose $200,000 would be just to go to Vegas for week! Forget dental school!
