Guys,
I am new grad, took Naplex (passed) and preparing for my MPJE.
Most my rotations was in hospitals, little bit of retail.
Now i am looking for a job, would like a hospital position but the hospitals in my area is not hiring at the time and i donot want to relocate.
Now i am thinking of retail, but i have a little experience with retail.
I have great stress about being able to be the only pharmacist in the store, i used to have a lot of pharmacists around me in the hospital where we can discuss anything we have doubt about. I am very stressed about those people who submit forged prescriptions. I do not want to sacrifice my license.

Any input from retail pharmacists to relieve my stress,
Thanks.

As long as you go through the appropriate measures to screen controlled prescriptions, you will never be brought to court by the DEA.

Here are some general guidelines to look out for:

  • Is the person a regular patient at your pharmacy?
  • Do they have a history that is strictly controlled drugs?
  • If you work for a chain, you should be able to check their profile chain wide.
  • Is the prescribing physician from your general area?
  • Is it for a large quantity?
  • Is it for an odd quantity 42, 56, 84?
  • Is the drug name spelled correctly? Percoset is usually a bad sign.
  • Does the patient behave suspiciously?
If you are in doubt, call the physician to verify the prescription and document the call on the blank. If you are really suspicious you can call the phone company and verify of the number is a land lane and if it is a business or a personal line.

You will never have your license threatened or jeopardized if someone gets one by you. It happens to the best of us.

If you work in a chain, there are camera's everywhere and you can have a lot of fun with people. I caught someone who had passed several Vicodin scripts at my store. The doctor finally called back and said they were fake. When the person came to the counter I went over and pointed to the camera and said "Smile. The prescriptions are fake and now we have your picture. If ever see you in this store again, I'll have you arrested. He left the store so fast I thought the Olympic Committee would be calling for his name and address...

Make sure that you can find the doctor in your computer system (I'm assuming that the company will have a system). That's a pretty good check for authenticity. Doctors and dentists will usually alert the pharmacies that are near their offices when their prescription pads are stolen. For whatever reason, I've seen it happen to dentists more often.

If you have a good relationship with the DM, call them if you have questions about a particular script.

As long as an rx for a control med. has the doctors DEA number, correct directions and appropriate quantity, and the handwriting is not too perfect as well as the signature then u have no reason to worry.

Yeah, the DEA number is one of the biggest give aways, I have seen fake scripts where they believe that a DEA number is just random numbers that they threw on the script. ;D

you can spot a junkie a mile away

they are the ones who come in smelling like stale cigarettes........usually a goatee........long hair with or without a ponytail.........nascar or some ripped black t shirt with a wolf on it.........tries to make small talk with everyone working in the pharmacy........comes into the pharmacy 5 minutes before closing, usually on a friday night (when the doctor's office is closed).........you tell them the fill time is 2 hours and they will gladly wait............

usually if the pharmacist is very suspicious or has doubts, the tech asks if we have it in stock..........pharmacist goes to the cabinet, shakes a couple bottles, and says we don't have enough to fill the rx..........tell the junkie we need to call the doctor on monday..........TRUST ME..........they will ask for the fake rx back and try and find another pharmacy..........even though he was screaming 5 minutes earlier about how much pain he is in because a tree fell on his leg

also, the ones that ask you specifically if they can have brand name, before they hand you the rx.

Thank you guys, that was really relieving.
