Based on the background check and self-disclosure form that you fill out prior to signing a contract for a residency position, is it possible for the residency to deny you a position? This doesn't have to do with not disclosing the information, which was discussed at length in a prior thread, but if you were completely upfront with issues that could or could not be found during the background check. This also would not deal with the specific NRMP question of convictions and the like. If the position is withdrawn, is there any recourse?

Yes, in several scenarios. First, your position is usually granted through the GME office. Let's say you had some sort of an alcohol related event in the past. You told your program all about it, and they decided it was fine. The background check is done by GME, and they find the exact same details. GME decides it's not fine, and refuses to credential you. Your program could argue with them and get them to change their mind, but if they won't, there's nothing you can do. Another example is failing a drug test -- we had a resident fail one once (not my program), and the PD wanted to hire them anyway assuming they could pass a second test. GME/Hospital said no, and the resident was not hired.

Second possibility is that the details may come back different than what they expected. That might be for many different reasons. If so, then they might also not hire you.

Both of these are unlikely. The first should have been addressed before the match by the program. The second would really depend on how honest you were.
