Questions about 2 programs

I've been researching residency programs (for my 2008 application) and there are 2 programs that I'm interested in that I haven't heard much about and haven't found anything by searching SDN either. I'm wondering if anyone can comment on the strength of the Las Vegas program and the Univ of Miami/Jackson Memorial program. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

I had a passing intrest in the Las Vegas progam during my 8-day honeymoon there a couple years ago, but was dismayed to learn that it only accepted incoming PGY-2s, and you had to have completed your neurology requirement in your intern year. Hope that helps!

Thanks! That is interesting... From what I read on the website they have changed that now and one can start PGY-1. Looks like you do 2 months of Neuro, 1 month Medicine, 2 months of Family Medicine, 1 month of EMED all at UMC. I'm hoping someone from the program frequents this site and can comment on the strength of the training.

I got married in Vegas and loved it. Crazy hot summer weather but interesting place to say the least.

UNR (Reno) has the longer track record and is considered the original program in Nevada. Vegas is still in its infancy with lesser-known faculty and rotations that may not be as coherent as Reno's. This is not to say you can't get good training in Vegas, but it is to say that Reno has the better reputation in the Silver State.

I would caution choosing a program based solely on location. Residency is just a short couple of years but the quality of your training will follow you decades into the future.

I think I recently heard that an eloping patient was shot and killed at UNR... FWIW, sounds like a scary place to work.

I'm actually more curious about the Vegas program in regard to the patient diversity and potential range of psychiatric disorders. I did see that the Vegas program was pretty new. Thanks for your input!

UM is extremely picky. They are not even a great program. The place is really disorganized and its as if they randomly choose people for the residency. The program coordinator is seriously BiPolar.lol...Im not kidding wait until you meet her. I hope you catch on a good day because some days she just hates everyone.lol...

I wouldnt apply there. The only thing they have, and they use it to there advantage, is that the program is in Miami-which is really over rated-i know, im from there.

there are so many other great programs to apply to. just my 2 cents...

looks like ur looking for a fun city. i interviewed at vegas. there is no call. didactics centers around kaplan and saddock's. program is for "pioneers" according to the PD as it is new. the residents are mostly older, especially the upper classmen as they didnt have pgy-1 b4 and those older ones transfered for family reasons. vegas has some interesting home grown characters. if u like a good and easylifestyle and a good post-residency job market in vegas in a fun city it is a good program. if ur looking for research, etc go elsewhere. unr is more estabilished.

To golfpropsychguy- I may do an externship at Miami and wanted to know if you had any more information to share about the program. My fiance works there, but not within the Psych Dept.. Thus, I am strongly considering them for location and family reasons but the quality of the program is also VERY important to me. Private message is welcome. Thanx.

Residency in Vegas. I'm wondering if there's any Vegas related cases that you wouldn't find elsewhere.

Part of my residency covers Atlantic City (yeah I know, its nowhere near as good as Vegas). We get some very interesting casino resort-gambling-drug-prostitution related cases. I'm wondering how much this would happen in other places.

The one thing that ticks me off is there's so many free buses to AC that some of the hard & difficult frequent flyers from other cities are actually put on buses to AC by their health care providers who want to get rid of them. We get a lot of patients (very low functioning) who end up on AC and I ask them, "who gave you the idea to come here?" and they always bring up 1 of 3 psyche attendings names from 3 different institutions. "they told me to get on this bus to AC and then when I got here, everything would be fine".

We call the provider up, and they deny it, but when you got dozens of difficult patients over the years and they're all saying the same 3 names from the same 3 institutions.....

For the past year it hasn't happened so I'm wondering if the people doing it finally got caught by someone in the gov or they retired or moved to a new place.

You make a valid point. Likely any large urban program could be comparable. I guess traditionally Vegas has been seen as this isolated spot in the desert with a massive concentration of decadence and everything over-the-top (and lots of addiction disorders!). I believe reality is probably quite different. You still have these issues, but likely the majority of the population is 'ordinary' people, going about their work and everyday lives. I guess something to consider would be the rate of population growth which can be a double edged sword, but possibly good, very good, if looking to start a private practice. Although in this case one could potentially get stronger residency training elsewhere and just relocate there later.

And I'm curious, too. Did the patients ever say why exactly the docs sent them to AC? I mean, obviously they were trying to get rid of them, but were they told to go there for medical care or just to head on out and have themselves a vacation😀? If going to AC will solve my problems, I'm there.
