Hi,

I have a few questions about what it's like to be a psychotherapist/LCSW.

1. I heard that the burnout rate is astronomical. Is that true?

2. Do you find that you make enough to support yourself?

3. Do you feel respected by other mental health professionals (PhD, MDs)?

4. Is it true that there's the constant threat of downsizing?

5. Are your clients indigent/working class people, middle class people, or a mix?

6. Do LCSW sex therapists work with couples, young people, gays, etc or with pedophiles/convicted felons?

7. Are your clients ever disrespectful?

8. Do you feel that an MSW from Catholic University is worthy?

9. Is there a lot of religiousity in the MSW programs?

Thanks for your help!!😍

I think there was a recent discussion of this on a separate thread. In general, unless you pick a school with a very strong, well-earned reputation for having a progressive social justice outlook, you'll probably find a lot of conservatism, conventional thinking, and religiosity amongst other social work students, as well as some faculty. I was in an MSW program for a semester and didn't see any glimmer of the social justice framework folks often associate with social work. I did see homophobia, sexism, and heterosexism, however. The general attitude was a clumsy, I-know-better-than-the-poor-savages-here-let-me-help-you outlook.

I have had the exact opposite experience. I'm almost done with the CUA MSW programme. PM me if you want more (specific) info.

This is encouraging to hear! The two programs I have heard about that appear to deliver on the social justice promise are CSU Long Beach and Cal (both in CA, obviously). My program really broke my heart.
