Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this forum and i was hoping that some of you could help answer a few questions about dentistry. Well firstly i know that dental school is four years long, but i was curious whether like medical school you had to pursue a residency in order to specialize. And if so how long are these residencies and can they take up to four or five years like in medicine? All responses are welcomed and appreciated - thank you in advance.

did you seriously bump your thread only 30 minutes after posting?

Anyway, dental school is 4 years (or 3 if you go to UOP)

After that, you can practice dentistry, or you can specialize. Specializing is different than a medical residency. You don't have to specialize in dentistry, but you do have to do a medical residency. The specialties include, briefly:

Oral Surgery
Periodontics
Pediatric Dentistry
Public Health
Orthodontics
Prosthodontics
Endodontics
and a couple more I can't recall right now.

For the most part, the programs are 2-3 years. You have to apply in order to specialize and that means you need to be, depending on how competitive the specialty programs are, in the top of your dental school classes.

Unlike residencies, you don't usually get paid during specialty school, you actually continue to pay whatever school you attend. The only specialties I know of that are 4 years or more are for Oral surgery, but those are often the programs that also get you an MD degree

Thanks so much for your reply djeffreyt. I really appreciate it. Sorry about the 30min bump - like i said i'm new.

You're only required to a dental residency after school if you want to be a general dentist liscensed in NY.

uh, residencies are generally paid arent they? not a lot but you do get something
