I would like to train my sister's dog to stop or freeze on command, no matter what she is doing (chewing, running, eating, whatever). She is very smart (a great pyrenees). I'm just not sure how to go about doing that. Any advice would be good. Thanks!

I don't know how you trained her before but you can probably use a method called capturing. First train the dog that a particular cue (whistle, good, clicker, yes) means that was right. Then start watching the dog whenever she stands still give her that cue. After she starts offering the behavior more often you can add the command to it. Once she has figured this out start with her walking and ask her to freeze. Once that is in place move on to a more distracting situation, running, other dogs, toys etc).

I agree with Angelo and love clicker training. We just train this as a very strict form of Stay. My SAR dogs have several variations of stay, but I have one dog that did film work, and for him, stay meant absolutly no movement. We trained stays the pretty typical way: ask for a position, R+ for longer durations of that position, then thin out (don't R+, ignore) any position w/duration that included any additional movements, then put in the cue (we use both a verbal and visuals.) Clickers work well for marking the coming R+.
