Hi everyone.

I'm new here. I'm actually still a high school student, so please don't knock me! 😉 Anyway, I originally wanted to be a teacher, but now I'm considering a career in medicine. So from my understanding, you have 4 years of UG, then 4 years of med school, then a number of years of residency depending on your specialty. This is gonna be a really dumb question, but then where exactly do fellowships come into play and exactly what are they? I've heard about EMS fellowships and I think I'd be interested in that (part of my motivation to switch from teaching to medicine is because of being a volunteer EMT). I'm not worried about getting into med school now or anything, so please don't think i'm an uptight pre-pre-med...I just wanted some clarification about what it would take to become a doctor. Thanks so much for responding!

fellowwships come after residency. They are not required, but if you want to subspecialize you need to get one. For example, you do an IM residency and then a Cardiology fellowship to become a Cardiologist, or do a Radiology residency and then subspecialize in Interventional Radiology by doing a one year fellowship.
