What is fourth year like? I am curious about the schedule and typical grading systems. Is it just an extension of third year?

What is the timeline of fourth year like? (ie. When do you apply for residencies and attend interviews? How do some people know where they matched earlier than mid-march of fourth year?)

Do your grades in fourth year impact residencies at all?

Sorry for the many questions. I got accepted into medical school a few weeks ago and was researching into what my next few years will look like. Thank you!

Fourth year has been an extension of third year for me, grading wise. Clerkships are largely the same things, only in fourth year you’re doing sub-i’s, so sometimes the hours are longer and more is expected of you. At my school they follow the same P/HP/F for all four week clerkships during fourth year (same system as third year) and simply P/F for two week clerkships.

Timeline varies per school. Regardless, the MAJORITY of applications go out Sept 15 through AMCAS. Exceptions are the military match, ophtho match, and urology match (and idk their timelines, but military goes out earlier and they match in December). When it comes to interview, different specialties follow different timelines. Im FM, so i got my first interview on 9/15, went on my first 10/3, and have them scheduled into February. Missing time for interviews is school dependent. My school only allows three days per block to miss for interviews (there are attendings who tell you to say screw that and go on your interviews.. don’t ask don’t tell). This is why I am taking my next block off.

Your grades can impact it. You can choose when to release your transcripts, at least at my school.

4th year is like third year. You apply for residencies on 9/15 and attend interviews from October to January depending on the specialty. Grading is the same as third year. Usually only the first couple of rotations of 4th year will appear on your transcript prior to application. Previously, some students were able to agree to residency agreements outside of the match, that is no longer the case.

How do people have time to do 3 aways or sub-Is or whatever before submitting ERAS? At my school my core clerkships end at July. That leaves 2 max AIs and it seems difficult to get a LOR or know your grade before submitting apps.

My third year ended in April

Also, from whom do we usually get our letters of recommendation letters? From our professors from preclerkship, preceptors from clerkship, mentors, or a combination of these? Thanks!
