I have some questions about the GI Bill and HPSP, I would be grateful if someone could answer them.

1.) If you have prior service, how does HPSP work? Does the prior service count towards the obligation for HPSP or do I have to service for another 4 years after graduation?

2.) How much does the GI bill cover for dental school? I read that it covers up to the highest in-state tuition. However is this tuition based on undergraduate or dental school?

3.) If you have prior service, will a military dental residency after dental school count as service time?

1. Prior service does not count toward the HPSP obligatioin. However, if your prior service was as enlisted and you have OVER four years of service on your DD 214, you will receive your military pay while on ADT at a higher rate (O-1E).

2. You are better off not using the GI Bill while in HPSP. While in HPSP you will not receive the full benefit package allowed by the GI Bill. This gets confusing and if you would like more info on the GI Bill while in HPSP please PM me.

3. Any time spent on active duty other than the time on ADT while in HPSP counts as service time. Will the residency "pay back" the HPSP active duty obligation - No.

The GI Bill is useful for Dental school purposes if you're doing the HSCP program the Navy offers. There are plenty of threads that discuss the ins and outs of it by doing a search for it.
