Hello all,

I just had a couple questions about pre-reqs that I'd like to get some advice on:

1) I took 1 year of Biology, General Chemistry and English at a 2-year college before I transferred to a 4-year university. The credits were recognized at the university and went towards my degree. I'm just wondering if having taken some of the pre-req's at a 2 year-college will have an adverse effect on my application. I looked at the MSAR and some of the schools on my list accept community college credits (phew) but some say "case by case", and I'm not sure what to expect from those schools.

2) I noticed on the MSAR that some schools require lab components along with the general science courses. I've taken 1 year of Physics and 1 semester of Biochem. With that said, my Physics courses had lab portions but are only 6 credits, and my Biochem course had no lab component. For a school like Dartmouth who requires 8 credits of Physics, 4 credits of Biochem, will this be an issue at all?

Thank you in advance!

I would love to hear any advice on this 🙂

1) For the case-by-case, his suggests that you should take at least one or two upper division courses in those areas to show proficiency.

2) For the lab in Biochem, I don’t know of any school that wants Biochem lab. For the physics, 6 credits is not enough. You should take 1 upper division/further-along physics class to get that credit number up. It is kinda weird that your physics series was only 3 credits each as that is normally a 5 credit class.

@samualjhatfield Yeah, I took first year physics, with labs and everything but for some reason our physics department only gives out 3 credits for those classes. Thanks for your response.

I'd love to get some more feedback if possible, @Goro @gonnif

OP you are FINE! You have 1 year of physics w/lab which means that your university probably just assigns a lower credit. This is directly from the Dartmouth website:

"One year (8 semester hours or equivalent) of general biology and general physics"

Sounds to me like you're good.

I don't know of a single school that requires biochem lab.
