Hi,

I have been accepted to Touro-NV and I am seriously considering matriculating. I have a couple questions to anyone familiar with the program.

1. I heard the curriculum for years 1 & 2 is a little fluid. Have most of the changes already been completed?

2. Can anyone tell me about the rotation sites for yrs 3 & 4. I know it includes some the hospitals vegas. Is there a list out there? Are the sites for MI & NV shared? Is teaching conducted at these hospitals?

Thanks,

1. Touro-Nevada follows the same curriculum as Mare Island. I'm not quite sure what you mean by fluid and most of the changes to be made. The curriculum is set and cannot be "changed" as per AOA guidelines for accreditation.

The first year courses are as follows:
OMM I & II
Introduction to Biochemistry and Tissues
Basic Science Foundations I & II - (physiology, histology, and biochemistry (where appropriate))
Introduction to Medical Microbiology and Immunology
Gross Anatomy & Embryology
Neuroscience
Physical Diagnosis I & II
Introduction to Clinical Medicine I & II
Preventive Medicine and Public Health I & II
PBL

The second year courses are as follows:
Clinical Systems I & II
Pathology I & II
Pharmacology I & II
Medical Microbiology and Immunology I & II
Behavioral Science I & II
OMM III & IV
Primary Care Skills I & II
Laboratory Diagnostics
Orientation to Clinical Rotations

2. Clinical Rotations for the third and fourth years:

Hospital Sites are ranked by the students in order of preference and is by lottery:

UMC/Valley: University Medical Center is a Level I trauma. Both UMC and Valley are teaching hospitals.

Sunrise Hospital:is currently a Level 2 Trauma Center.

St. Rose Dominican Hospital: is a Level 3 Trauma Center.

These sites have spots specifically for Touro-Nevada students. You do not have to be concerned about losing a space to a Touro-MI student. Yes there is teaching at these hopsitals; you are a medical student and will be taught by your attending. UMC/Valley has residents and you may be taught by them as well as your attending. You will get what you put into your education. You will also see students from University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine since they also use UMC as a rotational site. You may see students from other medical schools as well.

You can contact Roger Corbman for anymore information or if you would like to contact other TUN-COM students by email.

Good luck in your decision.

YOU PICKED TOURO-NV over TCOM? You do realize that TCOM is possibly the best D.O. school in the U.S. right? their average MCAT and GPA is higher than any D.O. that I have looked at.

Congratulations on your decision, you must really love TOURO-NV!!! 🙂 Would you care to share your reason? I am visiting Touro-NV in mid February, and I am very interested in your point of view 🙂

Whoa whoa whoa ... are you serious? First of all, my school's average is MCAT: 27 and GPA 3.5 (I go to COMP) - I doubt TCOM, or any D.O. school for that matter, is higher than that. So in terms of averages, TCOM is probably not the best although this doesn't determine what school is the best overall.

And about Touro NV - it is a fine institute. Their faculty, administration and students happen to be the best I have interacted with. And their match list from the CA campus is impressive too and I would imagine their NV campus will be fine as well since they duplicated the CA curriculum.

Well if you visit TCOM you will notice that it is pretty much just an M.D. school with OMM. Very competitive environment, students don't know eachother. Staff is friendly but that is it. Touro has an awesome match list and the sense of community in the school and the students are awesome. Oh to the COMP guy, you might be 27, 3.5 but TCOM is 38, 3.6... So yeah TCOM does have the highest MCAT GPA but touro isn't bad either. They are 26 and 3.4.. Also the lower GPA from touro is most likely accounted for from the schools their students come from.. UC Berkeley, UC davis, Brigham young, Caltech, Columbia.. TCOM students are basically only coming from TEXAS so thats why you get the higher GPA, there aren't any hard schools in texas other than UT. Basically TUCOM is an awesome school oh and boy it feels really medical once you get inside the building, the anatomy lab is awesome..

2004 entering class at TCOM: 27 / 3.5 and 2005 28 / 3.5 and like I said - this really does not determine which school is "best".

What ? Avg MCAT 38 ? Did you mistype ?

I'm sure the 38 was a typo, it should be 28...but is still pretty impressive.

"ONMYWAYTHERE": the link you sent said that Western U is the hardest PRIVATE D.O. school to get into...Please note that TCOM is not a PRIVATE school, therefore it probably was not considered in that ranking.

I'm curious about TUCOM-NV because I will be interviewing there, and I really want to know what about that school that won some people over, while some walked away unimpressed. The student feedbacks from SDN shows both sides...

I'm also curious as to how someone can pick TUCOM-NV over TCOM, while the MATCH for TX school will not be revealed until February 1st. Basically, NO ONE from TX knows where they will MATCH until February 1st. So, how can you pick over a school that you haven't been accepted to? (unless, of course, you're not a TX resident)

I know that MCAT score and GPA does not tell the whole story about a school, another word, you can't judge how "good" of a school is by statistics...but doesn't GPA and MCAT score stand for something?

And the last thing, THERE IS NO HARD SCHOOL IN TEXAS??? Just because we put a "not-so-bright" President in office doesn't mean Texas education isn't hard. 🙂 j/k.... i'm not even gonna touch on this subject.

By no mean I am putting down TUCOM-NV or any other D.O. schools. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I am interviewing there mid February, and I am looking forward to it. I'm just curious on what about TUCOM-NV that won you over 🙂 someone mentioned that it has an impressive matchlist? I'm under the impression that the first class at TUCOM-NV is still in their 3rd year...how can there be a matchlist? Please educate me on this subject.

Probably referring to the matchlist from the Mare Island campus.

the classes are set, but the schedule is "fluid" kind of. we first years do have some input on how the schedule is set up. last years class had anatomy all yr long, and had to overlap it with neuro. their class did not like that at all, so our yr has anatomy from august to march, with just a month overlap of neuro. 😀 i'm sure there are going to be more changes for the next yrs class (i've heard rumors of a change in OMM times or something)...

hope that helps...

:scared: oh get a room!!!

matter of fact...we should have a comp/touro party at...let's say...The Wynn or MGM. It was us 3 who organized the Spring get together wasn't it. You know, it will be a great opportunity to share or thoughts and ideas on such issues as the efficacy of cranial omt, joint match, etc...

Thank you all for your feedback. I just came back from interviewing at DMU this weekend. So far, for me, it's been DMU, TOURO-NV, & LECOM-Bradenton. I am beginning to realize that these schools are more similar than they are different. Fundamentally, they all have lecture halls, an anatomy lab, and an OMM lab.

As far as TOURO-NV goes, the facility is not as "pretty" as the other two schools in my opinion. However, functionally, it is definitely up to par. One major advantage that TOURO has is the clinical rotations at level I & II trauma centers all within the Las Vegas area.

Can any of the 2nd Year student's from TUCOM-NV tell me what the how many spots are available for students doing rotations at the three hopital locations listed above (UMC/Valley, Sunrise, and St. Rose)? Is UMC harder to rotate through because it's the only real "teaching hospital" in the valley? What's the lottery system all about...is it based on class rank or is it totally random? Are most students planning on rotating in Vegas or are some forced to leave the state to do them elsewhere?

I was just curious about this because I know most of the 3rd and 4th year UNSOM students do the majority of their rotations in Las Vegas at UMC. I know Touro-NV hasn't started any of their students through rotations yet but if you could give me as much info. as possible that would be great.

Congratulations! I hope you didn't loose any deposit $. Unfortunately, I lost my deposit at Western after getting off the waitlist last minute at Touro. 🙂 The newness of the school, the great opportunities to start traditions in a booming medical area, and the enthusiasm of the staff, faculty, and students, is what made my decision for me.
