Questions about UCSF?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks again to citygirl for all the info...I am one of the many, it seems, who has still not gotten an interview (I guess that puts me in pre-interview hold, though I haven't gotten a letter or anything that tells me I'm in "hold").

But I am starting to want an acceptance from UCSF more and more...it started out as my dream school, and I'm pretty sure it still is. Do you think a letter of interest could help at this point? If so, any pointers on what to say?

I know a letter of intent can be helpful in some cases...but I don't think I can say "if I'm accepted, I'll definitely come" because of financial issues...i.e. if I get a scholarship somewhere else, I might not end up at UCSF...even though I really, really want to go there! Any thoughts, or should I just give it up at this point?

I just got my letter today!!! I'm in at UCSF!!! yayayayayayay!!!

I actually also got my acceptance letter to UCLA today too!! total craziness!

I'm so excited!!! I loved UCSF. 😍

for anyone who's still waiting, I'm in Massachusetts. It's weird ... I totally thought that it would take longer for the west coast mail to get out here and I was shocked outta my pants when I got the letters today.

Hey are you leaning towards UCLA or UCSF? I know people who would choose UCLA and people who will choose UCSF...It seems like it becomes a lifestyle choice

hey Calbee,

I think that I'm leaning towards UCSF. I really liked UCLA and will probably mull over this a bit more ... but I think there is actually a pretty good chance that I will not even submit my letter of acceptance to UCLA. I actually grew up in the LA area, and I kind of want to try living in the Bay Area for awhile ...

If I were in your shoe, I'll probably make the same choice. I like SF the city more than LA.

I would just give them a call if I were you. The Admissions Office staff is very nice. They won't tell you if you are accepted over the phone but they will give you a general idea where you are in the process. It's possible they mailed you something and you never received it or that your file was "lost". Did you check your status on the website? Definitely call, though.

Congratulations kokonut!!! If you have any doubts about where you want to go check out the second look weekend.

Thanks again, citygirl...I will definitely try calling the office. I did check the website, and all it says is that my secondary was received on Dec. 6th, I think, and that I should wait about 8 weeks from then to hear about an interview. Well, it's been 8 weeks, and still nothing...

I know this will sound like a silly question, but how would you phrase a question about this when calling admissions? I guess maybe just a simple, "I haven't heard back and was wondering where I am in the process"...? I just worry that the admissions office would get a negative impression of me if I phrased my question wrong.

I also really, really want an interview, but I doubt I can express that over the phone, right? As I posted before, I have been thinking about writing a letter of interest, but don't know how to do it either...or if it would be of any help.

Thanks for the advice...I will try to call them on Monday.

Don't be nervous about talking to the Admissions Office! Easy for me to say, right? I think your question above is fine. They know you are interested just because you are calling to follow up, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to let them know that you are really hoping for an interview. I wouldn't bother at this point with a letter of interest unless you have anything relevant to add to your application such as additional work, research, school, or personal experience. Otherwise, I don't think it adds much. It also doesn't do any harm. See what kind of vibe you get from calling and then go with your gut.

Good luck.

yeah Kevin congrats!!!!!!!!! I'm still on pre-interview hold.......does anyone know if they contact you via email/snail mail if you're granted an interview off of the hold list, or do they just update the status page???

well, i called the ucsf office (not the joint program) just to double check about the hold status and she said it would be mail only and it doesn't sound like there's been any movement yet... and they said they have not mailed anything to me yet for sure.

i can't believe i forgot to change my address with the joint program! that was really dumb... they mailed me the invite in mid Feb.

does anyone know how many people the joint program interviews and how many they accept?

thanks!! so where are you going? are you waiting for columbia mail?

holding right now at maryland and virginia. high priority at sf and waiting for pitt, duke, columbia, and cornell. waiting on edge for some good news in the coming weeks!

hi everyone,

doctorkevin, i saw that you private messaged me but i thought i'd post the answers to your questions on the thread in case anyone else had similar questions. congrats on your interview! here are the details you asked me about... i think they interview about 70 people to fill the 12 spots, and i think they accept twice as many people as there are spots to be filled, so i guess they accept 25-ish? i'm not positive about these numbers, but when i was at my interview, i asked them about this and they gave me the estimates. as for the interview details, it'll all be on the berkeley campus, i had two faculty interviews, if i remember correctly, they were both closed file. then you go out to lunch with a student (not an interview, just a chance for you to ask questions). everyone in the office is really really nice and friendly. the smallness of the school makes everyone pretty cohesive. good luck, i'm sure you'll do great!

neato, those are not bad odds.

wow it would be so weird to end up starting medical school back in berkeley where i did undergrad in psych!

.....and the UCB-UCSF joint program students get to have their white coat ceremony with the other MS1s at UCSF. Good Luck, DoctorKevin!!!

If anyone is still interested, UCSF is ending its interviews by March 18th and they will contact you by email or phone if you receive an interview.

March 18th? Thanks for letting us know. 🙂 The pre-interview hold letter said to wait until April 15th to hear from them, but if they're done interviewing on March 18th, then I'll just consider myself rejected. I already considered the interview-hold basically a rejection, but I guess now I know for sure.

March 18th is the last interview day this year, although this is much earlier than in years past. Some people are getting called off the preinterview hold list but apparently the numbers are fairly low. Sorry this isn't happier news.

I see that an official "UCSF Class of 2008" thread has been started. You have all grown beyond needing my motherly advice so I will quietly bow out now. *Sigh* If anyone has specific questions, please PM me. Good luck everyone.

any recent news? does anyone know if decisions are sent sometime soon?🙁

If I hear when the next Adcom meeting is being held I'll let you know. I'm guessing they meet next week sometime and then letters follow within a week. The last interviews will be next week as well.

citygirl- when you say last interviews do you mean last period or are there still some in april for the hold group??

I called the office today for something completely unrelated to my status, and the woman told me a bunch of decision letters were sent out yesterday. Good luck to all!

Right now they don't plan to interview at all past March 18th. This is a new thing for them this year as they usually interview into mid April. They have already interviewed 500+ applicants at this point so unfortunately there isn't going to be much action off the preinterview hold list.

chapinsita are you going to UCSD if UCSF doesn't go through?

Turns out UCSF did go through!!!

I got my acceptance yesterday, it was in the bunch of letters they mailed on 3/15. I already wrote my withdrawal letters to the other schools that accepted me so I hope those spaces go to SDNers.

Congrats chapinsita!  Looks like you weren't destined to go to MSSM after all.

Thanks Flash!

I have to admit a little part of me (little, little) is sad that I have to withdraw from MSSM afterall....just when I was liking the NYC idea. Have a great time though, MSSM is a great school!

Congrats, chapinsita!!!!! You will love UCSF. Are you planning on coming to the second look weekend? I didn't go because I was sure where I was going, but now I wish I had, only because I would have had a chance to meet a lot of my new classmates. If not, be sure you go to the camping trip the weekend before school starts.

Anyone else out there hear anything yet?

i am anxiously waiting post interview...and i keep running my interview in my mind. what did everyone that got accepted think of the interviews? i just got rejected from ucla so i am a little down and tired of this process...any responses will be greatly appreciated! does anyone know if you can appeal post rejection to any school?
congrats again!

anyone waiting post interview???🙁

I am, but I'm expecting at best a waitlist since my interviews went so horribly. Apparently only acceptances went out on Monday; waitlists and rejections are sent separately.

I loved UCSF....especially the research opportunities, integrated curriculum and students. I'm out of state and so would have to spend quite a bit for the first year at UCSF. I'm just waiting for fin aid packages and so don't have a first choice right now.

Good luck yayme! Do you definitely want to stay in Cali?

staying in ca would be nice...but i think i want to go to ucsf more than anything...even if they were located somewhere else! what other schools are you deciding between?

I just got a waitlist from UCSF postmarked March 22, so if you haven't gotten anything yet, perhaps good news will come next month!
