i called the office right now and decisions for acceptance we go out around the 15th as always. even though they met 3/29th (information gathered from our helpful sdner), i htink they will wait. she said no decisions have been sent this month...hope that helps. 🙂

I've been browsing this forum for awhile and wanted to thank all of you guys for all your helpful posts. I wish the best for all you guys that are still waiting!! Hopefully you won't have to wait much longer because I know for a fact that UCSF sent out some acceptances yesterday April 9!! Keep your heads up!

It's true. There were some acceptances sent out this week and I'm sure more will be sent by the 15th.

I went to the mailbox hoping not to get a letter. I thought that they would send out the acceptances on the 15th like they told me after the interview. In my mind any UCSF letter in the box was a rejection letter. However, I saw it was a thick package and seriously lodged in my small post box. I was yanking on it like a monkey on crack. The other person getting her mail was a little nervous. I was pretty sure it was an acceptance, but a little unsure. (Maybe they decided to be really sadistic and put together a whole presentation on their main reasons for rejecting me..."We didn't feel a letter fully expressed our utter disatisfaction with you as a candidate...") Anyways, it was an acceptance.

Are you expecting a letter today? Are you on the west coast? I'm in the northeast, and might get my letter today or tomorrow if they were already mailed out.

Possible yes, advisable probably not as much. The morning commute (say, 8-9am) would run you about one hour by car, and probably around the same via public transportation (BART/MUNI combo).
Is there any particular reason you're considering Berkeley?

i got mine saturday and i was floored!
i'm currently at berkeley so i thought it would be easier to keep housing here but it seemes as if that is not so easy to commute!

Actually, it is possible. There is a free shuttle that goes from UCSF to the BART station and back again. You can read on the shuttle and on BART so it's not really wasted time. I think the shuttle runs until after midnight so its possible to stay late for electives or late studying and still get back home at the end of the day. It does cost a few bucks to ride BART, but if you have cheaper rent and you are settled into your space it is probably a wash. Driving from the East Bay, however, would suck.
I live in Pacifica and drive to school every day. Yes, it is possible to find free parking. I do have a bit of a walk and I count that as a plus since it means a little extra exercise. I also like being totally away from school at the end of the day from a mental health standpoint.

I'm in a post-bac program right now and I'm about 4 days and counting from taking the first but extremely daunting step of med school on Saturday (oh how we love testing for 8 hours). I have two questions for you,
One, do you know people in the MD/PhD joint UCB/UCSF program and what are their thoughts on it, and two, how much does UCSF consider family lineage when looking at an applicant?

If you are in the Mills program, I know many students are known to end up in the JMP...
Men, I just got my acceptance packet today, total shock!!!!!. The problem is that I am now torn between UCSF and UCLA. Hope to see you guys during the 2nd look weekend. I just have to convince my boss to give me some time off. Damn I hate my job.

The MD/PhD program is different from the UCB/UCSF program. The MD/PhD students are in the regular UCSF class right now and will go on to start their PhDs after 2nd year. The UCB/UCSF students are at Berkeley until their clinical years. I don't really have any thoughts on either program except that you have to decide if you want to pursue a PhD or Masters in Public Health to apply for either of these programs.
I'm not sure what you mean by family lineage. California not longer abides by Affirmative Action quotas for admission. UCSF likes to have a diverse group of students and ethnicity is a small part of that, but a family pedigree will get you nowhere.

So, I got very sick of that and moved into a much nicer 2BR that's 1500 a month. You can easily find something a bit cheaper, but for what I'm getting (great lighting, nice bay window, huge room, free heating/water/garbage, etc.) and where it is (lower Nob Hill/Downtown) it seems worth it.
The Sunset and the Richmond kinda suck btw... even though you might find deals there. If you want something cheap and reasonably close to UCSF, look at the Haight and inner Mission.

I just called about their "high priority waitlist". Apparently this is the only waitlist (correct me if I am wrong), but it is currently unranked. The adcom will be meeting after May 15th to place the people into acceptances/alternate/rejections category.

This coming weekend is the revisit weekend so hopefully some people who are on the fence will make a decision one way or the other sortly thereafter.

I"m not aware of any shuttles that go from UCSF paranassus campus to the BART station. However, you can easily take the Muni-N car towards the downtown SF BART stations (any one will do, starting from Civic Center). Bare in mind that Muni is $1.25 and then BART from SF to Berkeley is like $3.05, so that's like $8 a day roundtrip (i know there are discount passes, but still). I would advise finding housing in SF if you can...such a hassle to commute, I've done it before, and it sucks.
I would not drive if I were you. It's extremely difficult to find parking both in SF and in Berkeley. I know it's *possible* but I won't go through all the trouble.

Hey Mentoz, Welcome to the Golden State and the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. Be prepared for the price shock of everything esp the housing. You may check the UCSF housing option under their website. You will find plenty of great restaurants close by UCSF- the Richmond /Sunset district, the little Italian in North Beach, the Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown/Financial District. Congrats on your acceptance. 🙂

Downtown does slow down at night... but plenty of things are open past 10pm here, there is no poop in the streets unless maybe you are talking about the Tenderloin or Inner Mission maybe. Autism? Huh?
The transit here is great... although the buses can be a bit erratic in terms of scheduling, they are still great.

I spent a week in SF last summer, and I have to say that the amount I'd pay for a nice Italian dinner here in Houston will get me a mediocre meal that I could've made myself in SF .. I understand that prices are higher though ... maybe it's best that I don't spend too much money on good food ... who needs the extra pounds 😛 .... oh but I do remember finding Mexican holeinthewalls after stumbling around in the middle of the night that are comparable to the stuff we get down here by the border .. mmmm..

If financial aid is one of the factors for your decision btw ucsf and another school, then you can request an estimate of financial package. This way you have some idea about the cost of ucsf before may 15th.

I don't think there are any official plans for Friday, but MS-1's have lecture from 8-10am and then a lab from 10am-12pm, all dealing with the Spinal Cord. (We're just starting our Brain, Mind, and Behavior block.)
