Is parking really hard and expensive to get there?

How expensive are the apartments around forest park?

Are there very many houses available to buy/rent or are there mostly only apartments?

What stuff do I need to buy (i.e. stethoscope, other medical instruments, etc)?

anybody else definitely going to school there?

anybody else definitely going to the MSTP program at WashU?

•••••I think the answer to this question hinges on if you're going. 😛 😛

The city is very very affordable in general. I'm certainly going to the MSTP 2nd look to take a 2nd look. There's a chance I might go there but it's slim. I wasn't sure I'll fit in too well at the school. My idea of hanging out is slightly different from sitting around a table and licking blobs of frozen custard at a place called Ted Drew's.

But one thing that I really really liked about the students I met at WashU was that they were idealistic. They want to go out into the world and make a difference type of thing. That really impressed me. I didn't notice that quality at the other schools. At least the students didn't talk about it openly.

No. Parking is reasonable compared to many other schools.

We're getting a three bedroom place for $1300/month. Look at the right time you'll get $900 (We just missed it). We're in walking distance of the undergrad campus though (two miles away, across the park). If you don't need to be in walking distance, it gets cheaper. There is a shuttle that goes around the neighborhood of medschool, if you want to live a little further and not use your own transportation.

In walking distance, mostly apartments. Over two miles, yes you'll find houses. Depends how many people you will have.

What stuff do I need to buy (i.e. stethoscope, other medical instruments, etc)?

I have no idea... I'm not yet a medstudent. 😀

anybody else definitely going to the MSTP program at WashU?•••••I know some MSTP students (actually only a few), if you want you can e-mail me and i may be able to send you his e-mail address.

Anything else, feel free to pm /e-mail me.

I am pretty sure I am going to be attending the MST program at Wash U next year. I am waiting to hear from a few places to make my decision final, but I am pretty sure.

When I was there, Brian, Andrew and the students seemed to indicate that there was plenty of places to live. Many of the students buy condos and split the payments I think.

During the 2nd look many of the applicant spend time with a broker to find a property to rend/buy.

I don't know what the MSTP students have to purchase, I think a lot of it is covered by the fees that the program pays for. I am not 100% sure.

Additionally, I don't know what you guys did when you interviewed, but I didn't see any frozen custard. I remember going to a few bars. The school is basically owned by Busch. Hence the name of their school of law.

PM me if you have q's

•••••Don't get me wrong. Custard is definitely good stuff. Especially when it is frozen 😀 I wander who sat down and thought up that bright idea 😕 Probably Ted Drew.

More seriously; I feel honored to have an acceptance to WashU. I sincerely consider it the damn best med school in the country. The size of the program, funding, and lab space can't be beat. WashU is a beast. Barnes Jewish is definitely in a class by itself. I just hope I don't regret my decision down the line. In anycase, I'll definitely be at the 2nd look. Not that anyone cares, but I'm still up for grabs otherwise I wouldn't be going for 2nd look. Maybe we'll meet out there; or maybe we'll even be classmates.

Original,

Have you actually been to St. Louis and Durham? Seriously man, I mean Durham has basketball for sure but that is IT. How many professional sports teams does durham have? zero St. Louis? 3 of the best. What about neighborhoods? Let's see, Durham has the Duke neighborhood and the ghetto. St. Louis has more neighborhoods than I have time to describe. What about cultural activities? Okay, there is no comparison here. Duke is one of the world's best medical schools that happens to be located in Durham, NC. St. Louis is an incredible city that happens to have one of the world's greatest medical schools. Good luck with your decision. I was just trying to give you a pro-WashU perspective since everyone on this page is so pro-Duke.

Hi. I'm not MSTP but there's a decent chance I'll end up @ WashU MD (provided I get the expected small envelope from Columbia tomorrow) . . .anybody considering living in the dorm? I stayed there, adn they're a whole lot nicer than many of the other med school dorms on, say, the East Coast . . .but they seemed kind of "dead". Hence my not-so-intense excitement about the school initially (I'm reconsidering). Any insight?

the dorms are probably dead, because most students dont live in them. the cost of living in st louis is really cheap, especially for a decent size city. They told me most students live off campus. Rent can be from 300- 500 bucks a person (the lower end is actually cheaper than alot of areas around durham/chapel hill for those intersted).

But I really don't want to get a car . . . are you goign there, logan?

Bobcat,

Thanks for the advice. You're right! basketball is probably all that Durham has; and worse yet, it seems they're losing that too. Maryland just whooped the devil out of the bluedevils yesterday. I guess they should appropriately be renamed the Duke Blue 😛 . Coach K wasn't smiling.

In anycase, I'm hoping the student body will somehow compensate for the lifelessness of Durham. If not, I grew-up in a small town (.5 million) and did undergrad in a small city (1 million) so I should be alright. I'm not from NY or LA. I might be disappointed either way, mais c'est la vie. I'm just really happy to even have such outstanding options.
