I am attending an Open house soon and i was wondering what are some good questions to ask, and What should i wear. I don't want to over dress but i don't want to under dress either.

Hi! So at the open houses that I attended, I wore jeans, closed-toe shoes, and a nice shirt. Mostly everyone else was dressed the same. However, I did see some people dressed to the max and then some dressed in shorts and t-shirts (I don't recommend that route!!)

As for questions to ask, it depends on the school you are going to. I asked if they offered residency programs once you graduate if you want to specialize in a certain area of PT or if they had many students that commuted. I would look at that particular program and try to find a question specific to what they offer. A lot of times you will come up with questions during their presentations!

Have fun and hope this helps!! 🙂

Thank you so much for the response. I think Jeans and a nice shirt is the route i was going to go as well but i wasn't sure. I will try to do my homework on the program prior going, maybe that way i can have a few Q's. Thanks again for your feedback!

It's just open house, so nothing TOO formal. Depending on how interested you're in and if you'll be speaking to professors, slacks and a polo maybe.

I see that most people here are recommending to go very casual. I actually recently just went to an open house and decided to dress in business attire (heels, pants, cute top, and a cardigan). And can I tell you I am SO glad I did.

There were very few people there and I had a lot of one on one time to speak with the professors and the admissions committee. So basically I had a mini-interview while I was there.

And second of all... first impressions are everything! If you look the part and everyone else is dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, who do you think they will remember more? Take the time and look nice, also wear comfy shoes because you will likely tour the facility.

I agree with Emma. You are there for academic business so dress the part. The DPTs you meet are most likely in the admission board so you want them to remember you as a serious adult, not some kid in jeans and a tshirt. When I go, its usually a nice dress shirt, dress pants, and black dress shoes. If a girl, west a nice business attire.

yep, slacks, polo and dress shoes at a MINIMUM. If you get an interview to wherever you are applying (assuming they do interviews- if not, then an open house might act like an informal interview) then thats when you dress in a suit, im speaking from the male POV.

I would recommend business casual e.g. dress slacks, polo shirt, and dress shoes.

I do not think it really matters unless you get personal time with a professor or if you ask enough questions to make an impression on the staff / professors doing the open house. The open houses I have been too have 20 -30 people there and unless you stand out, they will not remember you. The schools I visit have an open house monthly, so unless you stand out by speaking with the professors about something significant or stand out during a Q/A session, I doubt they will remember whether you wore jeans or business attire. Just my two sense.

Just wondering- are you talking about UVM?

I went to the info session (I went directly from work so I was wearing normal work pants/ button down shirt). No one was really dressed up except for another girl who had also clearly come from work. A lot of the attendees were college seniors, going to the open house between classes.

I agree with business attire. I went to an open house wearing black dress pants and a nice shirt. Yes, most people were dressed a little more casually, but I know that I made an impression. One of the others on the tour was even concerned and said she hoped that she dressed well enough. I felt much more comfortable with the impression I made being dressed for the part : )

I know this is a late post but I thought I would contribute, having gone to several open houses myself.

If I were you I wouldn't worry too much about what you wear. But don't wear flip-flops and your favorite football team's jersey. I would wear what you wear in the clinic: khaki's, a collared shirt or a Polo shirt, and casual shoes. That's what I wore, except I wore a fleece when it was cold outside. Nobody really cares. The faculty wore nice clothes but they're there to impress you too.
