questions for current NSUCOM students

So i asked this in the school specific thread but havent had any luck with a response to i figured id make a new thread. I have 2 questions actually, the first involves scholarships... are there any and if so how can you apply/what would you have to do? Also I know you can pass a shelf exam and test out of a specific subject area, when are those exams offered and what classes can you test out of? Is there any study material prior to taking such an exam? Thanks.

Well...for scholarships, there are several ones that are offered throughout the year. They are usually supposed to be for Florida residents, but often no one applies except out of staters, so they often goto them! Basically, you'll get emails through out the year with applications and deadlines. They're not a LOT of money, but every little bit helps!
As for testing out of subjects...honestly, I've NEVER heard anything about that. I seriously doubt you're allowed to test out of anything!! If someone else knows anything different I'd be curious to hear it, but I think you've been misinformed, or are confusing it with something else.

3rd year here agreeing with above post. We don't even take shelfs...

there aren't shelf exams for basic sciences...? so no, you can't test out. the only people who "test out" of the classes are the MBS students who took the classes the year prior and got an A. even the pharmd in our class is taking every course alongside the kids fresh out of college.

there are also society scholarships available through SOMA, etc, but you're then competing against anybody who applies from the assorted DO schools.

To receive advanced placement (AP) for any course, the student will be required to pass the NBME Discipline Based Shelf Examination to determine their competency in the subject matter involved. Students who are successful in this effort will receive advanced placement by being given credit equivalent to the course(s) involved on their transcripts. The time made available by being deferred from enrolling in these course(s), will provide time for these students to serve as a teaching assistant/tutors."

Sorry...I just don't buy it. There are people in my class with PhDs in microbiology, PAs with 10-15 years of experience and other people with similar experience. ALL of them had to take every single one of our classes with the exception of the MBS students who passed the year before with an A (even MBS students who got Bs had to repeat!). You can always ask...but don't get your hopes up. Besides, it reinforces the information for boards!

Talk about coincidence man, I just posted a question similar to this in the NSU 2013 thread today. I think I'm just going to email the person who mentioned it during the interviews (Dr. Whitehead) to figure it out tomorrow morning. I'll let you know when I and if I get a response.

So I emailed Dr. Whitehead this morning about this and he responded saying:

If eligible, students will be given an exam one week prior to the start of classes in the subject area they are eligible for advanced placement. At this point, I would just“brush up” on the particular subject area that you feel you have a good foundation of knowledge.

As for books...I BELIEVE we used the big Constanzo, but I could be wrong.

I don't remember exactly what classes but I remember him mentioning Biochemistry, Physiology, and possibly Histology. I could PM you his email address if you would like to ask him.

Haha, I know what you mean, but I feel like I might as well do something productive with my time after work and this will serve as some motivation. If its not possible at least I'll be somewhat refreshed in biochemistry before taking the course. Thanks for helping with the book name.

Your time would actually be better served relaxing, going out with friends, watching movies, reading fun books and generally enjoying life!! Even if they DID let you test out of one class, or maybe two...there is STILL plenty of work in first year!!

Haha, that is true and what I've been doing now. But I kinda wanna keep my mind a little sharp and used to school so I can keep some good study habits for when I start.

Btw Doxy, I emailed Dr. Whitehead again and he said there are also tests for Physiology and Microbiology.

Constanzo has a physiology book, not biochem! the purple book Dr. T very much dislikes......

the biochem book is the Devlin one, which I have found to be a most excellent paperweight. 🙄
