Hi Everyone,

I'm starting in the fall at Ross, and I'm trying to get most of my housing plans/living situation sorted out. Do you have any suggestions as to where to live/not to live? And is on-campus housing worth paying a bit more? Most of the places I've looked at seem to NOT have a washing machine, so where do you go for cleaning your clothes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Housing:

The day after you land on the Island, the "Housing Department" will take you on a tour to look at available appartments. My reccomendations:

1-Portsmout Beach "Hotel" (the so called "on-campus" housing)
-Close to Ross (a 2-3 minute walk).
-Can be noizy sometimes (students partying).
-"Utilities" (electricity) is included
-Old and run-down

2-"The Pink House"
-It is a house so you will be sharing the house like a frat/sororoty
-CLOSEST TO ROSS
-Very hard to get a spot there in your first semester since spots are highly sought after.

3-The houses next to Jame's Store (Particularly Makenzy's)[/B]--I reccomend this the MOST.
-Right accross the "street" from Ross (very close)
-Clean
-Expensive

4-The houses along Banana Trail (example "MNR")
-Farther away from Ross
-Less expensive

Each person has his/her own taste. Do not decide until after your housing tour.

Laundry:

Most appartemts do not have laundry. There are three options if there is no laundry in your place:

-Do laundry on your own. Yes, the old fashin way-with a bucket, detergent, and a pair of hands (I did that sometimes)

-Give your laundry to your Landlord (if she is a she, and is willing to) and pay her for it. If she has a machine then she will use it, otherwise most locals do laundry the old fashin way.

-Give your laundry to self-designated "Laundry Girls"-These are locals who saved enough money to buy a machine, and offer laudry service to students. There are a couple of them, and you will get to know them pretty quickly. They charge more expensive fees.

Good Luck!

Most single students pay to have their clothes washed. They are like laundromats except someone else does it for you. Families usually buy their own washer like we did (paid $400 U.S.) and it hooked up to the faucet and drained into the tub! Then have to hang clothes to dry! With a large family that was the biggest pain. Just saying I wouldn't worry too much about washing clothes now. As for where to live I don't have suggestions except have you visited www.valuemd.com ??

I would agree with most of the above. Just to clarify though, the portion of PBH under Ross' control is wired for internet service, and the landline connections there count calls to the US as local calls ( at least that was the case a year ago when I left the island). I would recommend living in PBH for your first semester until you get to know some friends and the area surrounding the campus. The "London House" on Banana trail is an awesome deal if you find a couple of kids to live with, and its available, although usually it is booked the semester in advance. Good luck on the rock.

I lived at Safehouse when I was on the island. Backup generator, central a/c (they controlled it), 2 min walk to campus. near to james store. laundry in building.

I paid $700/mnth US for it. my electric bill was like $30 ec a month. came out the same almost when I lived in a mclwarence apt and had to pay for my electricity through her (a thief me thinks!).
