Ok, so as far as shadowing goes, how many hours do you typically like to spend with each dentist? Would it be 8 hours a day for a week, or two or more? 3 - 4 hours a day? How do i know when I'm becoming a nuisance (I actually don't want to get to this point so I'd like to just do the "norm").

Secondly, my GPA is not up to par as of yet (and I think the best I'll realistically be able to obtain is a 3.2 - 3.3), so I really need to shine in other areas: shadowing, volunteer, extra-curricular, etc. And as of right now, I have very little...does simply being a member of the pre-dental society help? Or do I need to be in the presidency?? If so, how do I get there?

Finally, my question is on how grades are averaged. If I have a C in a class that I retook with an A, would the grade be averaged to a B or 3.0?? Or is there other factors they look at?

Thanks for your help guys! GREAT FORUM!!!

Personally, I shadowed a dentist for about 2 months, once a week, 4-6 hours each time. I'm in the same boat as you. My GPA is not good. Do well on your DAT. Pre-dental association really doesn't help in my opinion. Unless you have an officer position showing you have leadership skills. officer position is granted by voting (popularity contest). You should tell the dentist that you want to shadow straight out in the beginning, "Please let me know if I begin to intrude." Grades are averaged with +/-, and without. if you have 40 hours of C's and 40 hours of A's, it averages out to B's.
