What a great forum! I honestly appreciate you taking the time to help others in your field. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!😍

Hi, I am 31 and married with no children. I have started classes in Colorado for a prevet major in biology. I have previous animal hospital experience but I was not a certified technician, I did some assistant work for 2 years.

We sre relocating to Columbus, OH so that I can attend OSU. I noticed that the community college there has a program for vet tech students interested in animal science, a joint program has been created between Columbus State's Veterinary Technology and The Ohio State University's Department of Animal Science. Successful completion of these two programs will result in an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Veterinary Technology from Columbus State Community College, and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from The Ohio State University.

I am wondering if this would be an appropriate route to take to continue some additional animal hospital experience and make me more competitive, or if it would just be better to continue with an undergrad biology or animal sciences major and apply after graduation. Any ideas> Thanks!!!

This would be an alright route to take so long as your pre-req. courses taken there can be applied towards a BSc. Virtually all vet programs stipulate that courses taken that apply towards a Tech. diploma do not satisfy the pre-req requirements - hence you have to be careful when choosing courses. Because of this, you may be wise to enroll in the animal science program at Ohio State leading to a BSc, rather than an associates degree. Further, applications are typically not bolstered by having a technician's qualification without some significant practice experience in that role (like 5 years or so).
