I am currently a junior majoting in psychology and am starting to research graduate schools. My ultimate goal is to become a play therapist and I have the following questions.

1.) Firstly, would it be better to get a Masters in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling? What does it mean that an MSW offers more options for insurance billing? Will I have more job opportunities with an MSW vs one in counseling?

2.) I understand that in nyc it takes 3 years of post-graduate experienced to get licenced as a clinical social worker and 150 hours of of education in play therapy plus 35 hours of supervision. Will I be able to accomplish this simultaneously? How long does it take to complete 150 hours, more or less than a year?

3.) Will I have a flexible schedule as a play therapist with a master's degree, i.e. being able to plan my schedule? How much do play therapists make in nyc?

4.) What is an average day like for a play therapist?

Thanks, I really appreciate any and all help. There really isn't that much info regarding play therapy that I could find on the internet.

Portability of license and greater employability are often given as rationales for getting an MSW over other masters degrees (MFT, etc.). The question is, do you want to do social work, or do you want to do counseling?

Good luck!
