I found a fairly large directory of DO's in the Houston area but I wasn't exactly sure where to begin. Are there certain specialties that are less accepting of pre-med students who want to shadow? Do you guys recommend certain specialties/FP for a better shadowing experience? The list is somewhat large and I'd like to narrow it down a bit and perhaps those of you that have shadowing experiences can help. Thanks! 🙂

In my experience, certain specialties lend themselves more to shadowing, and some less. Most, however, are crapshoots. More likely to allow it: FM, OMM, EM, lots of ortho surgeons seem to be agreeable too. Less likely to allow it: OB/GYN. Crapshoot = All the rest. This is just my experience, and you'll likely hear some dissenting opinions.

Just pick a few specialties you'd like to see, and send some emails to docs. This could be very low yield, as far as getting YES responses is concerned, so be broad in your hunt and don't get your feelings hurt.

Also, try the DO shadowing link in my signature. Many others around here have used it with much success, as the DOs therein have already agreed to be mentors to students.

Good luck!

where in houston are you from? i know at houston northwest hospital there are 2 e.r. DO's, 1 gastro, 1 general surgeon, 1 cardio, 1 orthopaedic surgeon, and 1 FP. you should check them out. i had the opportunity to shadow the FP, but the cardiologist was also available.

Nice, I'm actually from Spring around the 2920/Kuykendahl area so Northwest is definitely a good option... appreciate your input. 🙂
