I am a canadian citizen and live in BC. I am graduating high school next week. I am interested in applying to school of dentistry or medical. I have some questions regarding admissions to dental or medical school.

1. Can I go to medical/dental school after completing 2 or 3 years of bachelors? Do I HAVE to complete full four year degree?

2. Is it possible to apply to more than one medical school in Canada simultaneously? (For example, can I apply to U or T, UBC, McGill and all other universities same time.. so that if I dont get admission to one school....i can consider the other ones) ??

3. Are there any universities in Canada or US that offer a combined program (pre-med/pre-dental with the DDS/MD) ?? If yes, would u please tell the names of such universities??

4. What are the top universities in Canada or US for dentistry/medicine??

5. If I graduate from a US school, would I still be able to practice here ??

6. How much usually medical/dentistry schools cost (in Canada as well as in US) ???

PLEASE REPLY ASAP.
Thanks for ur time.

I can't speak to dental school, but i'll try to answer your medical school questions.

1. Most schools prefer a degree but some might consider your application after 3 years. You'll have to look up the specific admission requirements of each school.

2. You can apply to as many schools as you want and consider as many acceptances/waitlist/rejections as you get. Just remember that each school has a lenghthly application process, interviews, etc.

3. No combined programs that i know of.

4. All Canadian programs will give you a solid medical education

5. Yes, you'll have to write the Canadian exams though.

6. The costs continue to skyrocket. Each school's website will give you tuition costs.

Hope this starts you on your way. goodluck.

Also, it's best to visit each school's website for some of the information you are looking for. You have a few years to do it, so no rush 🙂

Hi

I am interested in dentistry or medicine. I did my undergraduate degree in Toronto, but my GPA was horrible. Not competitive enough for either professions. I have been reading around these forums, and I find these posts to be very helpful. I am strongly considering doing a second degree, but I spoke to some people and I am getting mixed answers. I know it seems a waste of time, but would you suggest doing a yr or two of courses...just to prove I have the academic potential? Any advice would be helpfull

Thank you

sorry for posting my question so many times...my computer froze 😕

I didn't read the responses, so I'm probably going to repeat the same info.

1. Can I go to medical/dental school after completing 2 or 3 years of bachelors? Do I HAVE to complete full four year degree?

No you don't HAVE to have a complete full four year degree (honours). You can apply during your third year. It is harder to get in, but it has been done before.
Also, some schools do require a 4 year degree, like Western, whereas others like UofT, do not.

2. Is it possible to apply to more than one medical school in Canada simultaneously? (For example, can I apply to U or T, UBC, McGill and all other universities same time.. so that if I dont get admission to one school....i can consider the other ones) ??

You can apply to every single school in Canada, the US and abroad. Remember this whole thing costs money, so you have to apply wisely. If you have a stellar application (you'll know what this means eventually), you may be invited to too many interviews and have to drop some because of time. If you don't have a great application, you may be applying to schools where you know you will be automatically rejected from. Make a list that suits you and hope for the best.

3. Are there any universities in Canada or US that offer a combined program (pre-med/pre-dental with the DDS/MD) ?? If yes, would u please tell the names of such universities??

In Canada, only McGill does such a thing. You don't do a bachelors, you have one "introductory" year into University, and then start medical school after that. No other Canadian schools offer joint MD programs, I'm not sure about dental.

4. What are the top universities in Canada or US for dentistry/medicine??

Don't ask this question here lol. I won't comment on the US, although Harvard, WashU, Stanford come to mind.
In Canada, all schools are good. I think there is more of a standard here since the schools are all public. Anyways, I think that McGill, UBC and UofT are the big players in Canada. But this doesn't reflect their medical education, more so their research, histories, and location. You'll enjoy the "which is the best medical school" debate.

5. If I graduate from a US school, would I still be able to practice here ??

yes, might be a little tougher (bureaucratic hoops, extra tests, etc), but many people do this.

6. How much usually medical/dentistry schools cost (in Canada as well as in US) ???

In the US it varies. There is a lot of financial support in ways of scholarships and grants, but I hear people talking about 200k debts after med school.
In Canada, I think around 15k per year is standard, plus living of course.

This quote is probably the most accurate quote I have seen on this debate - period.👍

I'm pretty sure you can, then again it depends on where you apply..

those 15k are for CANADIAN RESIDENTS only. for non resident is much, much more.

Some schools (UofM) are much lower than this.

Some schools (UofM) are much lower than this.

so do you imply that a BC resident will pay the same as a QC resident at UofM ?
think thrice...

Yea, I was assuming a Canadian resident.

QC resident going to QC school if you want to make it really cheaper.
