Hello, everybody!

I am 19 years old and just graduated from high school (class of 2011). I am currently attending a community college at the moment and as of right now, I am deciding to major in biology.

For my future plans, I would like to become a Dental Hygienist. At one of the universities in Missouri, there is a Bachelor of Science Dental Hygiene -Clinical Entry Level Program, Degree Completion Program Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, and Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education.

I am planning on taking the pre-requisites at my community college and then apply to dental school.

  1. What degree should I get to become a Dental Hygienist? (Associates, Bachelors, Masters?)
  2. Are there Dental Hygiene programs at community colleges?
  3. What Should I major in?
  4. What are some advice/recommendations for a freshman in college planning to go into Dental Hygiene?
  5. How would you suggest someone with no experience to seek for a dental assistant job?
  6. Is is difficult for a Dental Hygienist to get a career right after graduation?
  7. How much does it usually cost for tuition and fees etc to become a Dental Hygienist?
  8. I believe Dental Hygiene is still very competitive, and how many years does it take to become a DH?

If you guys can answer the questions and give me some guide lines on what I should expect, major in, and all that, I would greatly appreciate it. I hope everyone have a wonderful day! 🙂

Do not go into dental hygiene, it is literally a waste of time. If you want to become a dentist, do your undergrad in the easiest major that you can enroll into, and study for your DAT.

Thank you for the reply, Pat Kelly. Is it really as easy it sounds? And why is that so?

So you want to become a DH, then a dentist?

I'm not too familiar with DH programs, but the ones I know of you earn a bachelors degree.

Becoming a dentist or a DH is not easy. But if you really want to do it you can.

My actual plan was to become a dentist, but I am stuck between becoming a dental hygienist and a dentist. I will most likely go into dental hygiene. So, a bachelors degree in dental hygiene would be good? Thanks.
