I have some Questions about a Psych Residency....

1. How many hours per week does a Psych Resident work?

2. What is the pay for Psych Resident?

3. How often do you have call?

4.What is the lifestyle like during residency? do you have time to explore other interest?

Of course, it depends on the residency program.

1. I'd estimate between 50 and 80, depending on the program. It also varies a lot between years. Generally, the more advanced you are in residency, the less hours you work.

2. Again, depends. As low as 36,000 in some areas to almost 60,000 in others.

3. Generally Q4-Q7, depending on the program and year. More when on medicine, usually less when doing psychiatry.

4. Psychiatry is one of the more friendly "outside interests" residencies available. Often, you'll have no time to do extracurricular activities, other times, arguably more than other specialties, you'll have many more opportunities. Generally, however, residency is more work than most people are used to. There are often a lot of last-minute problems that demand your attention. Medicine months are more grueling.

But you have to remember that at every hospital, the pay scale for all the residents, no matter what the specialty, is the same. So all interns make the same amount, whether you are a pediatrics resident, or a psych resident, etc.
