Hi there,
I recently got accepted to NYMC ( 🙂 Yupppieee!!), and I have some questions:

1. What is the chance that a student can do the 3rd and 4th year in Manhattan? Do students have to compete in order to be able to do the rotations there? Or is it a lottery system? How do you compare the roations in Westchester vs. Manhattan hospitals?

2. How many class hours are there in the first and second year?

3. How much does it cost to rent a 2 bed-room house close to NYMC? What is the price to buy a 2 bed-room house there?

4. What do you like about the area around NYMC? Is there nice hiking? How about cultural things? Do you have to go to Manhattan for that, or are there interesting things close to NYMC? I stayed in Manhattan, and unfortunately did not have much time to explore the Hudson region, but I hear that it is very pretty.

5. Are NYMC students more liberal or more conserative?

6. How do you recommend that I should prepare for NYMC this summer before entering this August (eg. buying a stethoscope, reading books, etc.)?

Thank you very much for the input. By the way, I loved the campus (the anatomy lab is absolutely beautiful), and I especially found that everybody was extremely friendly.

Thank you very much for any input!

Sheesh dude... would you like a side of fries with that huge order? haha

No seriously, congratulations. A a recent graduate from NYMC ('01), I'd like to wish you a warm welcome. Be prepared for a tough journey, but when you leave the place you will be a well trained physician.

Now to answer your questions.....

1) During the 3rd and 4th year all the rotations are via a lottery system. Chances of doing your rotations in Manhattan are pretty good... the problem.. it takes DIVINE INTERVENTION to be able to get into the 95th street school ran housing apartments. A lot of people will have to live a regular city apartment... and pay a bundle in the process. I chose to do most of my rotations in Westchester becasue of that (as a California... I also wanted to keep my car). You will find that each hospital has it's own strengths and weaknesses depending on the rotation. At this point though you shouldn't worry too much about 3rd and 4th year, just concentrate on your Basic science years.... you'll be too engrained with studying to look that far into the future anyhow.

2) It's hard to answer that question. A whole schedule will be made out at the beginning of each class. And the lectures are scheduled with no real discernable pattern. Generally you will have 3-4 lectures a day.... or 1 lecture and a 3 hour lab session. This is for the Anatomy and Histo months.

3)I always lived on Campus so I couldn't answer this question.

4)Valhalla and Westchester is a big suburb. There is some degree of culture there if you look hard enough.. but c'mon.. Manhattan is a 30 min drive away... why go searching upstate when you have a playground just south of you?

5)when you have a class size of 190 students.. you get people from all political spectrums. So I'm sure you will find your political niche within your entering class.

6)Don't worry about equipment. They will have a representative from a company sell you some things.. at very decent prices. Books? Naw.... relax dude..... you'll have your face buried in them for the next two years.. no need to start now. BUT.... if you're really anal.... I guess buying a netter's atlas and admiring the pretty pictures wouldn't hurt.

Again, congratulations.... I hope all goes well for you... and say hi to Father Pravetz for me (he's a Franciscan monk that heads the anatomy class... very sweet man and a great teacher).
